Jasmyn Newsom to Swim for Junior College Powerhouse Indian River

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Jasmyn Newsom has announced that she will be traveling just under 200 miles down the Florida coast, committing to swim at Indian River State College for the next two years. Newsome is from Saint Augustine, Florida, where she swims for the Saint Augustine Cyclones and Pedro Menendez High School.

Last fall, Newsom helped her school’s 400 free relay to a B-final finish at the FHSAA 2A State Championships with a lead-off time of 57.33. She was slightly faster in prelims, swimming her lifetime best of 56.81. At the FHSAA 2A District 3 Championships, she finished in 4th in both the 50 free and 100 free, touching in 26.13 and 57.79 respectively.

The Indian River State College women are coming off winning their 39th straight NJCAA Championships title, having finished with over double the points of runner-up Southwestern Oregon Community College in 2021. The team was especially dominant in the sprint freestyle events, putting five swimmers in the A-final of both the 50 and 100 free. While she only contested the 100 at the NJCAA Championships, Taryn Dailey held the program’s fastest time in both the 50 (23.90) and 100 (51.59) last season.

As a junior college, athletes typically only compete with the program for two years, meaning nearly half of the team will graduate this year. While Taryn Daily will graduate, Sydney Weatherspoon and Lillian Lewis will have another year with the program. Both Weatherspoon and Lewis were A-finalists in multiple freestyle events at the NJCAA Championships.

With her best times, Newsom would have qualified to swim in the B-final of both of her events at the 2021 NJCAA Championships.
