IUPUI In The Running To Host 2017 World Junior Championships

The IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana may wind up being the busiest aquatic venue in all of 2017, as the storied ‘Nat’ is reportedly in the running to host the 2017 World Junior Championships. That would be just one of several major meets to be hosted by the historic site. The Natatorium, which also hosted U.S. Nationals back in 2013, is already seeing returns on its $20 million renovation project which officially concluded this summer.

In addition to becoming an installment in the 2017 Pro Swim Series, hosting a stop from March 2nd to March 4th next year, the famed location in Indy will be hosting the U.S. National Championships meet slated for June 27th to July 1st. With World Championships and World University Games taking place next year, the meet also serves as the Trials for those event squad. IUPUI is also slated to host both the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Championships meets.

Now, the IndyStar is reporting that the Nat is challenging Kazan, Russian, host of the 2015 FINA World Aquatic Championships, as the site of the 2017 World Junior Championships. The meet was originally awarded to Budapest, Hungary, but the city is now hosting the 2017 World Senior Championships after Guadalajara, Mexico withdrew its bid.

The World Junior Championships is a biennial event for junior swimmers, with last year’s version hosted by Singapore’s OCBC Aquatic Centre.

Hopefully the US will eventually bring the world champs to a city such as San Antonio or Atlanta!

Hope they keep the water at the proper temperature in all their pools. Last time I was there, competition pool was warm and the diving well was HOT! Not good if they want to host world class meets

waiting for a top-notch new venue to be built in the US. When was the last time a world class venue opened in the US (something like IUPUI, Texas, Atlanta, etc.)

Because we have so many good sites, and because every major championship (NCAA all divisions, juniors, seniors, Y, masters …) can go to great facilities, why is there a need to build another? By top-notch, you mean 50m, diving tank with towers, lots of seating, etc. There just isn’t the need at all to build something like that. There aren’t enough events nationally or world-wide that justify that kind of thing.

If you look at every host of a WC or Olympics in the last 40-50 years, those pools have almost all been radically reduced in seating capacity or underused or dismantled. Here in the USA, GaTech and USC are nothing like they were for their meets. Rio’s warmup… Read more »

Hope Toronto bids against them. As storied as IUPUI is the new Pan American Pool is better.
