Italy, China, Hungary, Spain Punch Tickets to WP World Juniors Quarterfinals

With the United States, the Netherlands, Russia and Greece awaiting in Friday’s quarterfinal round, eight teams set out to fill the opposing side of the scoresheet, facing off in Thursday’s playoffs.

Hungary, Australia, Italy and China claimed the remaining quarterfinal spots with victories, while Japan and New Zealand also won to claim a spot in the 13th place match.

Playoffs

Hungary was the first to claim a quarterfinal spot on Thursday, topping Brazil 14-10 , going up 3-2 in the opening quarter and staying one step ahead of its foe the remainder of the match. Janka Utassy led the victors with three goals, while Leticia Belorio netted five to pace the Brazilians.

Spain went up 6-2 at halftime and held on for the win over Australia despite being outscore 7-5 over the final two periods. Alejandra Diez put in a game-high three goals, one in each of the final three stanzas.

Italy boasted just a one goal lead over Canada through eight minutes of play, but poured it on over the final three quarters, outscoring their foes 15-4 en route to the quarterfinals. Agnese Cocchiere netted five goals, while Nicole Zanetta turned in a hat trick. Canadian Florranne Carroll also scored three goals.

China claimed the final spot in the quarterfinals, rallying from down 2-1 after one quarter, to dominate South Africa the rest of the game 12-3. Lu Bozhou led China with three scores, while Jordan Wedderburn notched three goals for South Africa.

Seeding Matches

Japan built a 10-3 halftime lead and kept its foot on the gas, pouring on nine more goals in a 19-5 rout of Kazakhstan. Kako Kawaguchi and Maiko Hashida each turned in four goals to pace the Japanese attack.

New Zealand jumped ahead 8-0 in the first quarter and carried the advantage to 18-3 against Portugal to nail down its first win of the tournament and earn a spot in the 13th place match.

Next Up

With spots in the semifinals on the line, the United States will face Italy, the Netherlands will battle China, Russia will take on Hungary and Greece will try its hand against Spain.

Thirteen and 15th place will be decided, while four teams will play for the chance at ninth place.
