The Hungarians, led by their powerful dual of Katinka Hosszu and Laszlo Cseh, sit atop the medals table after the penultimate day of the 2015 European Short Course Championships, but superior depth has Italy almost locked-in for the overall team scoring trophy.
Hosszu added two more golds on Saturday in the 200 IM and 50 back, the totality of the hardware earned by her country on Saturday. She now has 6 gold medals total to go with a total of 4 from the men’s team to put her team at the top of the tables by a whopping 5 gold medals (though they only have the third-most medals overall.
That means Hungary becomes the 7th team in the 22 editions of this meet to win double digit gold medals in one year.

While Hungary is leading the meet in gold medals, they’re focused entirely on individual events and haven’t swum any relays. Italy is running away with the overall team trophy thanks to a total of 57 individual finals swims, 13 more than Russia and 18 more than Hungary. That, combined with a maximum 80 points from two mixed relay wins, has the Italians almost out-of-reach in the battle for the team trophy.
