Italy Announces Finalized Roster For European Championships

The Italian Swimming Federation announced their finalized roster of 41 athletes who will be competing at the European Championships in Berlin. The majority of the team was chosen from the results of the Italian National Championships which were held from April 8th to 12th. Those swimmers include:

After the Sette Colli Trophy, which was held from June 13th to 15th in Rome, 11 more athletes were added to the team. Those athletes included:

Marco Belotti (CC Aniene) 
Dorothy Carli (Rome Gold Flames / Tyrrhenian Swim) 
Elena Di Liddo (CC Aniene) 
Elena Gemo (Woodland / DC Aniene) 
Luca Leonardi (Rome Gold Flames / Blue 91) 
Damian Lestingi (CC Aniene) 
Marco Orsi ( Golden Flame Rome / Bologna Uisp) 
Pizzamiglio Stefano Mauro (Rome Golden Flames / Blue 91) 
Fabio Scozzoli (Army / Imolanuoto) 
Andrea Toniato (Guardia di Finanza / Team Veneto) 
Carlotta Zofkova (Woodland / Imolanuoto)

Fabio Scozzoli, who is still rounding himself back into form after major ACL surgery in September, was granted a wild card spot on the team. Scozzoli has won individual gold at the last two European Championships, winning the 50 breaststroke in 2010 and the 100 breaststroke in 2012.

His status on the team will be reevaluated after the Italian Championships which will be held in Rome on August 1st and 2nd.

The Italians currently have 11 swimmers ranked in the top three in Europe with distance stars Gabriele Detti and Gregorio Paltrinieri holding down the top two positions in both the 800 and 1500 freestyle. 

At the last European Championships in 2012 the Italians finished third in the medal standings with seven gold, 10 silver and six bronze.
