Italians Extend Medal Table Lead, Denmark Snags First Gold On Day 3 of Euro Juniors

2024 EUROPEAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Italian contingent extended their lead in the medal table standings on Day 3 of the 2024 European Junior Championships, reaching the podium in three of the five finals at Lazdynai Pool in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Italy’s Sara Curtis successfully defended her European Junior title in the girls’ 50 free, putting up a time of 24.68 to win her fourth gold medal of the competition, having also won the 50 back, girls’ 400 free relay and mixed 400 free relay.

After Curtis set the tone, Caterina Santambrogio followed with a silver medal performance in the girls’ 100 fly, and Italy capped the night off by earning silver in the girls’ 800 free relay in 8:01.71, taking a close 2nd to Hungary (8:01.11).

Hungary’s lone medal of the day came in the relay, but it was enough to move them past Lithuania into 2nd in the medal table standings, matching their gold medal total (3) but having also won three bronzes earlier in the competition for six total (breaking the tie of gold medals, as Lithuania has three gold and three total).

Turkey and Romania also won their second gold medals of the competition, while Denmark was the lone nation to reach the top of the podium for the first time on Day 3, as Martine Damborg topped the girls’ 100 fly in a time of 58.75.

Great Britain and Germany are tied with Hungary for 2nd in terms of total medals with six, but neither nation has claimed gold as of yet.
