Isaac Stump Runs Away With 400 Free At Gresham Sectionals

Swimming is often a sport of milliseconds, but 18-year old University of Arizona commit Isaac Stump absolutely dominated the field at Day 3 of the Gresham Sectionals. Stump threw down a 3:57.37 last night, ahead of 21-year old Brandon Shreeve, who went 4:03.54. The swim was Stump’s personal best by over two seconds.

The drop builds on Stump’s massive improvements over his last couple years at Ironwood Ridge High School, swimming for the Flying Fish Arizona Swim Team — from summer 2015 to summer 2016, he dropped 15 seconds in the 400 free, as well as five in his 200 IM and over 12 in his 400 IM.

The women’s 400 free was also of note yesterday: the top three swimmers all broke the 4:20 barrier, with 20-year old Adriana Palomino coming out on top at 4:17.64.

Other Day 3 Winners:

• Rhyan White won the women’s 100 back at 1:01.60, coming from slightly behind to edge out Katharine Berkhoff, who went 1:02.27.
• Gavin Olson took the title in the men’s 100 back at 57.48. The second and third place swimmers, Rob Mead and Michael Zarian, were separated by only two one hundredths of a second at 58.06 and 58.08.
• In the 100 breast, 15-year old Kaitlyn Dobler dropped a 1:10.85, good for 4th overall nationally for ages 15 and under.
• Joshua Bottelberghe won the men’s 100 back with a 1:03.57, beating out second place by over half a second.
• Jamie Stone took first in the women’s 100 fly by just under a full second, clocking in at a 1:00.37.
• Evan Carlson won the men’s 100 fly with a personal best of 54.19.

The Scottsdale Aquatic Club is solidly in the meet lead with 1,655.5 points, and the University of Denver Hilltoppe team is second with 1,140.5. In third, the Jeffco Hurricanes are at 1,140.5 points, with the Boise YMCA Swim Team creeping up on them at 987.5 points for fourth.
