Is Cesar Cielo Changing Coaches Again?

Cesar Cielo, now the elder statesmen of Brazilian sprinting, is headed into uncertain waters with this preparation for Rio. After a disappointing performance at the first Brazilian Olympic qualifier, Cielo’s coach Arilson Silva expressed uncertainty that Cielo will continue training with him in 2016 in an interview with Folha.

While Silva seems uncertain about his future with Cielo, there is no word on who would possibly step in to train Cielo in the coming months.

Cielo has struggled over the past few years, with his last victory in major competition coming at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona. Since London 2012 the world record holder has tried a diverse set of coaches from around the globe. His first bid was to train with Alberto Silva, one of the top Brazilian coaches.

This was followed by a stint with fellow former Auburn swimmer Scott Goodrich, then troubled Australian coach Scott Volkers. Cielo’s latest move has been to train with the upstart Arilson Silva. Silva trains a small stable of high level swimmers, of which Cielo was the most accomplished when he joined the coach last year.

Silva other most prominent athlete is Joao Gomes Jr, who was sentenced to a six month suspension last year after testing positive for a masking agent.

Cielo still has much to give. But he doesnt know that. He is dealing hard w marketing and other people just want a slice of his name. He has involved to wrong people interested in mags pics, parties, paid pictures and naked covers +money. He is easily manipulated. Now he cant get out of this dark place. He cant find out where he started to make mistakes. It was before London 2012, when he lost to Manaudou?

I had the opportunity to meet him when I was 10, and I must say that he is a very humble, nice guy. I wish the best for him and I hope he gets at least a bronze next summer!

“his last victory in major competition coming at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona”

Well he failed a drug test right before that meet. Maybe he should try that approach again.
