The spotlight will be on Lagan Valley Leisureplex, Lisburn this weekend for the Irish National Short Course (25m) Swimming Championships with Ireland’s top swimmers competing for national titles. Competition will take place from Friday 12th to Sunday 14th December with 57 teams and over 300 swimmers in action in the first National Championships of the 2014/15 swimming season.
2014 European Championship teamer Brendan Hyland has been showing impressive form of late breaking the 200m Butterfly national record twice in the past month, most recently at the Coast Grand Prix in Aberdeen with a new standard of 1:57.89. Hyland has a busy schedule this weekend swimming six individual events.
Junior Conor Ferguson is one watch at the championships, the 15 year old set a new 200m Backstroke Irish Junior Record of 2:00.55 just two weeks ago at the Ulster SC Championships and will be looking to break the two minute barrier in the event on Friday.
Irish record holders Andrew Meegan, Antoinette Neamt, Curtis Coulter, Brendan Gibbons and Brian O’Sullivan will all compete this weekend with their eyes on the 34 national titles that are up for grabs, while there is sure to be a number of Irish records in jeopardy over the three days.
