The first night of the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships was highlighted by three World Records and eleven championship records.
Ihar Boki of Belarus broke the first World record of the final session, but second of the day, in the men’s 50m freestyle S13. Boki’s final time broke his previous world record from 2014 by .01 seconds, lowering his record from 23.21 to 23.20.
After lowering the world record in prelims, Australia’s Ellie Cole broke the same world record for the second time today. Cole won the women’s 100m backstroke S9 with a new record time of 1:08.89. The record prior to day was set at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing by Stephanie Dixon.
The final world record of the day was set by Brasil’s mixed freestyle relay 20pts. The team of Estehefany Rodrigues, Daniel Dias, Clodoaldo Silva, and Joana Maria Silva combined for a winning time of 2:29.80 and the new record.
The American contingent performed well, winning three gold medals. Cortney Jordan won the first event of the day, the women’s 100m freestyle S7, giving Team USA their first medal of the games (1:11.93). Bradley Snider won a gold medal in the men’s 100 freestyle S11 (56.78) and later Jessica Long won gold in the women’s 100m butterfly S8 (1:09.79). Both Snyder and Long broke the Championship records in the process.
There are currently four multi-medalists through the first day of competition.
