OWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team welcomes two former World Champions to the competition pool Friday night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, but the Hawkeyes aren’t expecting to see any new pool records.
UI wrestling coaches Tom and Terry Brands square off in 50 yard freestyle competition when Iowa hosts Iowa State at 6 p.m. (CT) in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk series.
“I’m looking forward to the race,” said UI head wrestling coach Tom Brands. “It should be fun.
“I don’t know how a `maybe’ became `yes’ so quick, but credit to Marc Long; he’s a marketing genius for getting this set up.”
Brands won the 1996 Olympic freestyle gold medal at 136.5 pounds in Atlanta, but remains uncertain as to where his swimming abilities will land him Friday night. In the opposite lane is his brother and UI associate head coach, Terry Brands — a 2000 Olympic bronze medalist at 127.75 pounds.
“Neither one of us has been training for it,” said Tom. “It’s going to be a cold-turkey race. If you’ve ever seen us swim, you know it’s going to be comedy; there’s going to be a lot of splashing but no speed.”
Admission to Friday’s Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series is free to all ages.
