On Saturday February 6th Grinnell College Swim Team swam at the Mini Invite facing the University of Nebraska Club, a meet that has been contested for at least five years however this year was different. The Iowa State Swim Club showed up making this meet a triangular meet.
The Iowa State Swim Club, formed in 2013 showed up for a rare varsity college swimming appearance. The Nebraska and Iowa State Swim club won a total of five events, men and women combined. The first event won by a club was Nebraska Lincoln in the Womens Butterfly by Erin Stevens in 1:02.38. The next event won was by Seth Baetzold in the 100 yard mens butterfly in 55.02 seconds. The following win by a club was Erin Stevens again in the 100 yard womens breaststroke in 1:12.47. The 100 yard backstroke was won by Jeff Hyler of Iowa State in 56.89 seconds. The final scores were Womens: Grinnell 265 UNL club 50 Iowa State Swim club 10. Mens: Grinnell 269 Iowa State Swim Club 43 UNL club 28.
Daniel Goldstein of Grinnell set a record in diving with 333.65 points in the one meter beating the previous record of 312.00 by Phil Bishop in 1990.
Individual winners for Grinnell were Tim Sherwood in the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.14), Nicholas Roberson ’18 in the 200 individual medley (2:03.05) and 100 freestyle (51.22), Tristan Knoth ’17 in the 50 freestyle (22.55), Ben Grubb ’19 in the 400 individual medley (4:23.60) and 200 backstroke (2:06.02), Kevin Bennett in the 200 freestyle (1:48.91), Joshua Tibatemwa ’19 in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.14), Kyren DiMarzio ’17 in the 100 individual medley (56.86), Will Lindell ’19 in the 200 butterfly (2:05.79), Chris Sharpe ’18 in the 1650 freestyle (17:53.78) and Daniel Goldstein ’16 in three-meter diving (334.95)
The Pioneers also won the 200 medley relay (1:39.82), 200 freestyle relay (1:30.69) and 400 freestyle relay (3:22.68).
