Iowa Names Glenn Patton Honorary Captain for Minnesota Dual Meet

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former University of Iowa head men’s swimming and diving coach Glenn Patton will serve as honorary captain for Friday’s Big Ten Conference dual against nationally ranked Minnesota.

Patton, the winningest coach in program history, led the Hawkeyes from 1975-98, where he finished his career with a 168-63 record and a 72.7 winning percentage.  During his tenure, Iowa had six undefeated seasons in the Big Ten, and he led two teams to Big Ten Championships (1981, 1982) and five teams to runner-up finishes.

The Hawkeyes placed in the top three at the Big Ten Championships in 11 straight seasons (1980-90) under Patton’s tutelage and his teams finished in the upper division of the conference 19 times.  Patton led the team to top 25 finishes at the NCAA Championships in 16 of his 24 years.

Patton coached 11 Olympians, 23 individuals to 70 All-America honors, and 40 individuals to 32 relay All-America honors.  He also coached a total of 74 Big Ten champions.

Friday’s dual will begin at 5 p.m. (CT) at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
