INTERVIEW: Corey Okubo Assesses Performance at Juniors; Looks Forward to Nationals

Corey Okubo of AquaZot Swim Club won the 200 fly and finished fifth in the 200 back at 2014 Junior Nationals. He scratched out of his other events to focus on Nationals next week. Okubo took the time to sit down with SwimSwam and reflect on his performance at Juniors.  He also talked about his expectations for Nationals and beyond – notably Princeton, where he will be a freshman in the fall.

Okubo’s been on a great trajectory for years. Obviously Princeton has a great academic and swimming program, yet like others, I can’t help but wonder if he could have done a bit better swimming-wise with somewhat better practice competition at a place like Cal or Stanford. Of course every swimmer is different in what motivates them, and obviously I hope he proves my concern unfounded. I hope the Ivies continue to rise and provide a top competitive alternative for top scholar-athletes. I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do at Nationals. Congrats to Okubo for his stellar academic and swimming accomplishments so far.
