The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organizing Committee has announced that renowned Japanese and international artists have been selected to produce artwork enclosing the Olympic and Paralympic themes. The artwork will be featured in posters depicting Tokyo 2020’s spirit and vision as part of a program all host cities are required to implement and which aim to build awareness and momentum towards the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Beginning in the early 20th Century, Organizing Committees of the Olympic Games (OCOGs) have created posters to promote and advertise the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Resulting from their broad popular appeal and bold, easily recognizable imagery, Olympic posters continue to capture the international imagination and help establish each Games’ specific look and feel.
Some Organizing Committees have counted on internationally renowned artists and designers who have created create individualistic posters and left a powerful legacy forever associated with a specific edition of the Games. As a result, many of these Olympic art posters have become artistic and cultural icons. In recent editions, Paralympic posters have been created for each specific edition of the Paralympic Games.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organizing Committee has announced that renowned Japanese and international artists have been selected to produce artwork enclosing the Olympic and Paralympic themes. These works of art will be displayed at exhibitions in public spaces, as well as being featured on licensed products starting in early 2020 with the intent of raising awareness for the up and coming Tokyo 2020 Games.
The participating artists and designers include famous Japanese manga artists and calligraphers, as well as some leading young figures from both the Japanese art world, and other famous Japanese artists, designers, and photographers. The program also includes four award-winning overseas artists.
The participating artists in the Olympic posters are Takashi Homma, Shoko Kanazawa, Tomoko Konoike, Daijiro Ohara, Shinro Ohtake, Taku Satoh, Asao Takolo, Naoki Urasawa, Theseus Chan, Viviane Sassen, and Philippe Weisbecker. When it comes to the Paralympics, the participating artists will be Hirohiko Araki, Goo Choki Par, Koji Kaninuma, Chihiro Mori, Mika Ninagawa, Tomoyuki Shinki, Asao Takolo, and Akira Yamaguchi.
