BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University water polo team won the 2021 season opener over Salem University, 17-6, on the first day of the Hoosier Invite on Saturday afternoon at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind.
KEY MOMENTS
- The Hoosiers seized control of the game early, out-scoring Salem in the first quarter, 6-1.
- Sophomore Izzy Mandema matched her career-high with five goals, while 2020 All-American Tina Doherty also netted five scores in the victory for the Hoosiers.
- Sophomore Lanna Debow had a career day for Indiana, setting personal-best with four goals and three assists and matching her career-best with two steals.
- Also scoring goals in the win for the Hoosiers were sophomore Zoe Crouch, sophomore Katherine Hawkins and freshman Kiki Mein.
- Junior goalkeeper Mary Askew earned the win for IU, making three save while surrendering just one goal. Junior Sarah Greeven made eight saves in 13:08 minutes, allowing two scores.
NOTABLES
- With the victory, Indiana has won 11-straight games dating back to the 2020 season. The school-record for consecutive victories sits at 12, set in 2014.
- Also with the win, the Hoosiers improve to 6-0 in the overall series with Salem.
- IU won the team’s season opener for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
- Three freshmen tallied their first collegiate points in the victory for the Hoosiers – Mein (1 goal, 1 assist, 2 steals), Sophie Wazzan (2 A, 3 S) and Kallie White (1 A, 1 S) – while goalkeeper Haley Hunter made three saves in eight minutes of action in her debut.
- Sophomore Robyn Greenslade matched her career-high with one assist, while sophomore Zoe Crouch tied her personal-high with two assists.
