YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Illinois picked up top times in 11 of 13 swimming events and senior diver Ling Kuhn came away with the second-best 3-meter performance in program history to lead the Orange and Blue past Youngstown State (180-81) and St. Francis (200-56) Friday night at the Beeghly Natatorium. Day two of the meet, scheduled for tomorrow, has been rescheduled to an exhibition between Illinois and Youngstown State.

“Heading into the weekend we talked about taking advantage of all the opportunities to race and compete,” head coach Sue Novitsky said. “I thought we did that through all of the events.”

The Illini got off to a strong start, winning the first three events of the night. The relay team of Olson, Serniute, Vuong and Anderson got things started, posting the top time in the 400 medley relay (3:52.19). Freshman Abigail Martin and senior Aby Olson won the next two events, touching the wall first in the 1650 freestyle (17:29.69) and 100 backstroke (:56.71), respectively.

Illinois kept rattling off event victories, taking the top spot in the 200 butterfly, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke. Sophomore Jimena Martinez won the 200 butterfly (2:07.21), freshman Abigail Cabush took the 50 freestyle (:24.47), senior Megan Vuong swam the fastest 100 freestyle (:52.62) and freshman Sarah Cano posted the top time in the 200 backstroke (2:06.18).

Other first-places finishes for the Illini included Rebecca Corzine in the 100 butterfly (:58.56), Monica Guyett in the 200 freestyle (1:56.06), Fiona McDermott in the 200 freestyle (1:56.06) and the relay team of Curtis, Vuong, Cabush and Anderson in the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.18).

On the Boards
Illinois came away with its best 3-meter diving performance of the season on Friday, sweeping the top three spots on the event. Senior Ling Kuhn led the way, posting the second-best score in program history (312.90) to win the event. Elizabeth Rumsey also posted a career-best 252.29 to place second and Taylor Shegos placed third with a 240.00.

“Ling had a strong performance on 3-meter tonight,” Novitsky said. “She has been working to upgrade her dive list and she is starting to put them all together.”

The Youngstown State swimming and diving team had a strong performance against Illinois and Saint Francis on Friday night at the Beeghly Natatorium. The Penguins defeated the Red Flash while Tiphaine Saint-Gilles earned a pair of event victories.

Saint-Gilles won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.50 and took first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:24.56.

In the 1,650-yard freestyle, the Penguins placed third, fourth and fifth. Placing third was Josie Preski who swam a time of 17:56.02, Taci Miller finished fourth with a time of 18:23.33 and Taylor Bishop was fifth clocking a time of 18:29.04.

YSU also took third through fifth in the 100-yard backstroke. Placing third was Averi McCarthy with a time of 1:01.48, Rachel Shipp was fourth at 1:01.49 and Allyson Wilson finished fifth at 1:01.60. McCarthy also finished third in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:11.95.

In the 200 butterfly the Guins produced second and third-place finishes. Senior Zsani Csado was second with a time of 2:08.98 while Aida Jurinovics was third with a time of 2:10.03. YSU also grabbed second and third place finishes in the 100-yard fly. Jurinovics was second with a time of 58.91 seconds while Rachel Shipp clocked a time of 59.71 seconds.

Hannah Olger placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.61 seconds while Casey Prentice was fourth at 24.88 seconds.

Jurinovics capped the night off with a second-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.77.

Youngstown, Ohio- The Saint Francis swimming team lost to Youngstown State, 162-89 and Illinois, 200-56 on Friday night.

Individual Results

The quartet of Sabrina Bowman (Vandergrift, Pa./Saint Joseph’s), Erin O’Neill (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), Annabelle McCullough (Mercersburg, PA./James Buchanan High School) and Karilyn Quon (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol) finished third (4:00.99) in the 400 Medley Relay.

Jacquelyn Rocque (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) placed seventh (18:56.74) in the 1650 Freestyle.

Urska Medvesek (Maribor, Slovenia/Gymnasium Maribor) earned eighth (1:02.38) in the 100 Backstroke.

Mackenzie Lawson (Charlottesville, Va./The Covenant School) grabbed silver in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:07.69.

Rory O’Dell (Chapel Hill, N.C./Northwood) finished fifth (2;15.01) in the 200 Butterfly.

Erin O’Neill (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) achieved sixth (25.49) in the 50 Freestyle.

Sabrina Bowman (Vandergrift, Pa./Saint Joseph’s) earned silver (52.83) in the 100 Freestyle. She was also 0.21 seconds away from coveted gold.

Karilyn Quon (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol) placed second (2:09.19) in the 200 Backstroke.

Erin O’Neill (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) finished fifth (2;33.49) in the 200 Breaststroke.

Julia Bradford (Edinboro, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) earned fifth (59.93) in the 100 Butterfly.

Karilyn Quon (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol) placed fourth (1:57.82) in the 200 Freestyle.

Sabrina Bowman (Vandergrift, Pa./Saint Joseph’s) grabbed bronze (2:10.80) in the 200 IM.

In the 200 Freestyle Relay, the quartet of Sabrina Bowman (Vandergrift, Pa./Saint Joseph’s), Annabelle McCullough (Mercersburg, PA./James Buchanan High School), Erin O’Neill (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and Karilyn Quon (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol) finished fourth with a mark of 1:40.78.
