Ian Thorpe Admitted to Hospital in Sydney After Shoulder Surgery Complications

Swimming legend Ian Thorpe was admitted into a Sydney hospital for treatment of an infection on his left-shoulder, several Australian media outlets are reporting.

Thorpe was undergoing treatment on his left shoulder, an injury that caused the 31-year old to give up his comeback hopes after the 2012 Olympic Trials.

“It’s serious but it’s not life-threatening,” Thorpe’s agent James Erskine told the AAP. “He’s contracted two forms of bugs in hospital. He’s undergone two or three operations over the last two months so … I mean bad luck. He’s quite sick but that’s the situation.”

Despite multiple reports to the contrary, Erskine says that Thorpe was not admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). HOwever, remember that Erskine’s agency in late January denied that Thorpe had been admitted to a rehabilitation facility for prescription drug abuse, and a few days later they admitted that he had.

Erskine did say that Thorpe’s competitive career is likely over as a result, if that weren’t already decided.

This drug addict has cost the Aussie taxpayer millions putting him through the Sport. He should have had to pay back the same as Uni Students. Do not know why the publicity he is a disgrace.

Uni students do not have to pay back that much . $15,000 for an undergrad , $20,000 for a masters .

This reminds me of a comment in a newspaper ( must be the same person ) that Ian should pay back all it cost to put him through the AIS . To which someone replied”That’s a bit harsh , considering he never went to the AIS . “

I want so very much for Ian Thorpe to catch a break… After what he’s been through, he is certainly owed one.

If he contracted this infection in the hospital it’s most likely mrsa-ha which is very serious and can become life threatening. Hoping everything goes well with him

Fortunately it’s less worrying than the first news I read earlier in the day.
Hopefully everything will go quickly better for him.
