The pool in Cary is still cooling off from one of the quickest 100 fly races in American history last night, when TAC Titan Claire Curzan and Arlington Aquatic Club’s Torri Huske went 56.20 and 56.69, respectively. Curzan broke the 15-16 NAG record and became the #2 American in history, while Huske took out the 17-18 record, as the pair moved to #2 and #4 in the world this season, respectively.
This morning, Curzan and Huske tied in the 50 free, both hitting 25.26. Curzan was .03 off of her best time, while Huske dropped .08. Both have had lifetime bests at this meet in more than one event each, so expect them to battle tonight and test the 25-second barrier.
In their other events, Curzan narrowly missed a best and a big barrier with a 1:00.22 in the 100 back. She’s been 1:00-low a number of times, and hasn’t yet been able to crack her lifetime best 1:00.00 from 2019 World Juniors– she seems due for a drop there, though. Huske, meanwhile, hopped up for the 200 IM the event after her 50 free, going 2:18.04 for second behind Gamecock Aquatics’ Emma Barksdale (2:16.11). Barksdale and Huske have both been 2:11 before, so that’s another key match-up to look for in finals.
Wolfpack Elite’s Justin Ress posted a cool 53.63 in the men’s 100 back prelims, finishing well ahead of teammate Coleman Stewart (55.13). Ress has been 53.37 this season, from the January Pro Swim Series stop in Richmond, which holds him at #8 in the world right now.
OTHER TOP FINISHES
- Albury Higgs of Gamecock Aquatics swam to the top 200 breast time on the women’s side, going 2:36.55. In the men’s race, NCAC’s Peter Bretzmann went 2:16.93, his first time under 2:18 and a new Wave I cut (his first).
- Matt Josa (unattached) was 23.51 for the top time in the men’s 50 free prelims.
- Sam Stewart of the YMCA Hub Fins clocked a 2:03.85 to lead the men’s 200 IM.
Torri Huske almost always improves from prelim to finals. 24.8?
Might challenge Walsh’s 24.65.
