Hungary is sending 17 swimmers to Barcelona for the 2013 World Championships. Hungary is coming off of a decent year after making it into 12 finals and earning 3 medals at the London Games last summer.
The men’s World Championship Team is made up of 11 2012 Olympians, featuring the former 200 breaststroke World Record holder, Dániel Gyurta. Gyurta is swimming the 50, 100, and 200 breaststroke in Barcelona. The Olympic bronze medalist in the 200 IM, László Cseh, is also on the team, swimming the 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly, and the 200 IM.
The women’s roster features Risztov Éva, Olympic gold medalist in the open water 10k. She will be swimming the open water 10k and the 1500 freestyle. Another popular name on the roster is Katinka Hosszú. Hosszú swam for Dave Salo at the University of Southern California and was a finalist in the 200 IM and 400 IM in London last summer. She will be swimming 6 events in Barcelona. The women’s roster is considerably smaller with only 6 women, but all were on the 2012 Olympic Team.

Cseh could make a strong case of being on of the top swimmers in the world…arguably up there with Lochte. I’ve often wondered what his profile is like in Hungary. Is he a well known star, despite being mostly a USA based swimmer since early childhood?
I think at the end of the day he is smart to have competed with Hungary.
US based?
Lazlo Cseh has always trained in Hungary. To my knowledge, he has never trained in the US.

What misinformation is going to be posted next?
I never heard or read anything about Cseh training in Usa . I have always felt that he is hungary based ; they have a fabulous swimming school . This guy deserves the perseverence award one day .
I would love it if Cseh picked up some gold here, especially in the 200IM. I always felt bad for him because he was always taking back seats to Phelps and Lochte.
hard to get a gold.. now with Hagino..
He and Pereira are the two unluckiest guys in swimming history.. they had times which could grad gold on ANY games ever that did not had Phelps or Locthe..
Small team, but very strong.
Also, I don’t understand why Hosszu wastes her energy by swimming the 100/200 back.
Doesn’t Hosszu understand that World Championships is not scored like NCAA where the 8th finisher gets some credit?
Cockiness like this prevent Hosszu winning any medal (so far) in a major championships.
What? Hosszu won the gold medal at the Rome 2009 WC’s in the 400 IM. I think she also medaled (bronze) in the 200 butterfly.

Oh yeah, the shiniy suits championships.
Katinka Hosszu declared 400IM to be her main target which is on the last day. An excellent strategy to include as many secondary targets as possible before the main one. Any info if Hungary has relays too?
On the one hand I’m worried because I really hope Hosszu gets a medal, but on the other, she probably knows what is best for her. Perhaps she just loves racing too much or there is a plan or purpose that we don’t know. Still, my biased opinion says that Worlds are for medal hunting and world cup is for racing.
Probably a result of her time in the US with swimmers who grew up as age groupers
Swimming 5 events a day or swimming 3 prelims and finals a day in a 3 day meet. If she wants to she should go for it. Many times some go 2 events prelim and final plus a 1500 on the same day. That is the “tide”.
There is a difference between age group meets and World Championships.
Yes, many US swimmers also double and triple, but they dropped events where they have very little chance to medal even though they qualified, or even events where they have chance big chance to medal, but would interfere with their other events.
Example:
Ledecky dropped 200 free.
Missy dropped 200 IM in the trials
Lochte dropped 400 IM in the trials.
etc.
And Hosszu has very little chance to medal in 100/200 back. I’d be very surprised if she gets to final in either. I’d support her to swim those events if she swims 59low or 2:06 but she’s nowhere near close, unlike Missy in… Read more »
