Howard Men Power Past American, Eagle Women Edge Bison In Crosstown Dual

WASHINGTON – In a close dual at Howard, the women’s swim & dive team at American University came away with a victory by a score of 116-107 as the Eagles split the meet but won 10 events overall. Senior Mimi Watts, junior Seamus Brown, and freshman Kate Williams were all two-event winners for AU.

Notable

  • Three results on the women’s side were good enough for spots on the program’s top 16 lists.
  • Williams, who ended up with two wins on the day, first won the women’s 1,000 free in 10:45.02 which was good enough for 15th all-time. She later won the 500 free as well with a time of 5:15.81
  • Sophomore Isabel McGovern‘s time of 2:07.62 earned her a win in the women’s 200 fly and ranks 11th all-time on the program’s top 16 list in that event.
  • In the women’s 1-meter dive, sophomore Maggie Fanning placed second with a score of 200.35 that ranks 16th all-time.
  • Watts, who has not lost in an individual event this season, won the women’s 50 free in 23.59 and the women’s 100 free in 51.97.
  • Junior Amaya Tomma was a winner in the women’s 200 back with a time of 2:07.98.
  • On the men’s side, Brown won both the 1,000 free in 10:04.96 and the 500 free in 4:50.05.
  • Senior Nick Buckley took a win in the 50 free with a time of 20.63, and senior Will Timme won the 200 breaststroke in 2:11.63.
  • The final scores had the women winning 116-107 while the men lost 130-88.

Next Up

  • The Eagles are busy next weekend with two meets on the schedule, both a tri and a quad. AU will head to Loyola Maryland and also compete against Colgate at noon on Friday, Nov. 3, and will travel to Annapolis the next day, Nov. 4, to take on host Navy along with Bucknell and Lafayette.

WASHINGTON (October 27, 2023) – Howard University men’s swimming & diving dominated crosstown rival American, 130-88, inside Burr Pool Gym.

With the victory, HU has won back-to-back duel meets for the first time this season.

Senior Tristan Stevens (Chicago) led the Bison with three first-place finishes, including a victory in the 200 Back (1:56.41).

Stevens, along with classmate Mark-Anthony Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas), graduate Arion Solomon (Fairburn, Ga.) and sophomore Taj Benton (Baltimore), opened Friday with a victory in the 200 Medley Relay, clocking in at 1:32.51.

Individually, Benton placed first in the 200 Fly with a 1:55.94 time.

Solomon, Stevens, senior Spencer Miles (Lynchburg, Va.) and newcomer Mason Green (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) closed out the night with a win in the 200 Free Relay, producing a 1:24.41 mark.

Green and Miles earned gold in the 200 Free (1:43.48) and 100 Free (47.25), respectively.

Other notable performance included graduate Luke-Kennedy Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas) winning 200 IM, producing a 1:58.01 mark.

On the board, third-year Bison Jordan Walker (San Antonio) claimed victory in the 1-meter dive with a score of 252.85.

Overall, the Bison earned eight first-place finishes.

On Nov. 11, Howard goes to Lexington, Va., for a quad meet, hosted by the VMI Keydets. First race is scheduled for 1 p.m.

WASHINGTON (October 27, 2023) – Howard University women’s swimming & diving team dropped a close bout to crosstown rival American, 116-107, inside Burr Gym Pool.

Overall, the Bison earned six first-place finishes.

Senior Michaela Spears (Chicago) led HU with three victories, including a pair of individual wins in the 200 IM (2:10.37) and 200 Back (2:25.26).

Spears, alongside sophomore Zuilda Nwaeze (Columbia, Md.) and rookies Jasmine Morgan (Chicago) and Chanice Posada (Houston), claimed victory in the 200 Medley Relay, clocking in at 1:32.51.

Nwaeze also won the 200 Free, registering a 1:54.46 mark.

Posada teamed with sophomores Samyra Benoit (Santa Clarita, Calif.), Skylar Debnam (Chandler, Ariz.) and Kali Green (Altomonte, Fla.) in the 200 Free Relay, finishing in first place with a 1:32.97 time.

Third-year Bison Jordynn Connell (Flower Mound, Texas) earned gold in the 1-meter dive, scoring 208.55 points.

On Nov. 11, Howard goes to Lexington, Va., for a quad meet, hosted by the VMI Keydets. First race is scheduled for 1 p.m.
