Howard Defeats NEC Rival Mount St. Mary’s on Senior Day

Men’s Swimming

WASHINGTON (January 22, 2022) – Howard University men’s swimming & diving team topped Northeast Conference (NEC) rival Mount St. Mary’s on Senior Day, 158.5-62.5, inside Burr Pool.

With the win, HU improved to 4-1 overall in dual meets while earning its second NEC victory of the year.

“I’m proud of our team’s performance this weekend,” said Howard Director of Swimming & Diving Nicholas Askew. “Despite the long layoff, we were able to get back into a rhythm and perform well. Also, I’m glad to send our six seniors off with a victory.”

Before the meet, HU recognized six seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program, including men’s seniors Miguel Davis, Jr. (Washington) and Josiah Scott (Cedar Park, Texas).

Overall, the Bison posted 11 wins, including a pair of relay victories.

Davis, juniors Mark-Anthony Beckles (Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago) and Miles Simon (Atlanta) and newcomer Brenton Cooper (Baton Rouge, La.) opened the afternoon with a victory in the 200 Medley Relay, clocking in at 1:34.11.

Beckles, Davis, Simon and second-year Bison Spencer Miles (Lynchburg, Va.) earned first-place in the 200 Free Relay, registering a 1:26.46 time. In that same event, Simon produced a 20.82 mark in the first leg, which landed him seventh all-time in the school’s 50 Free record book.

Simon also won the 200 IM with a mark of 1:57.68, which sits seventh in program history.

Beckles claimed first in the 100 Free (46.43) while Cooper also took gold in the 100 Fly (52.58).

Miles secured a victory in the 50 Free with a 21.35 mark.

Bahama natives Luke-Kennedy Thompson (Nassau) and Mark-Anthony Thompson (Nassau) finished first (10:09.66) and second (10:20.32), respectively, in the 1000 Free, which ranks sixth and eighth all-time in school history, respectively.

L. Thompson also won the 500 Free (4:54.19) and M. Thompson earned first in the 100 Breast (58.77).

Other notable Bison include junior Reese Samuel (Pittsburgh) winning the 200 Free (1:46.52) and rookie Isaiah Swilley (Bourbonnais, Ill.) securing a victory in the 1-meter dive, scoring 222.50 points.

On Jan. 29, Howard finishes the regular season at crosstown rival Catholic. Meet time is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Women’s Swimming

WASHINGTON (January 22, 2022) – Howard University women’s swimming & diving team grabbed its first Northeast Conference (NEC) victory, knocking off Mount St. Mary’s (MSM), 162-55, inside Burr Pool.

With the victory, Howard earned its first home win of the season while defeating MSM for the first time in program history.

Jackson capped off her final home meet with a victory in the 100 Breast, recording a 1:11.66 time.

Overall, the Bison posted 11 wins, including a pair of relay victories.

Sophomores Michaela Spears (Chicago) and Aaliyah Young (Burleson, Texas) and freshmen Jorden Hill (Birmingham, Ala.) and Rianna Martin (Coral Springs, Fla.) opened the afternoon with a victory in the 200 Medley Relay, clocking in at 1:51.84.

Hill also won the 100 Back with a 1:00.83 time.

Martin and Spears joined sophomore Isabella Fountain (White Plains, N.Y.) and freshman Kelsey Roberson (West Orange, N.J.) in the 200 Free Relay where they claimed first place (1:41.10).

Individually, Fountain won a pair of events in the 50 Free (24.84) and 100 Free (54.61).

Spears finished first in the 200 IM, registering a 2:14.50 mark.

Second-year Bison Alana Josey (York, Pa.) secured wins in the 100 Fly (1:01.47) and 1000 Free (11:01.76). For her efforts in the 1000 Free, she ranks third all-time in program history.

Newcomer Zaylie-Elizabeth Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas) took second in the 500 Free, but produced the ninth-fastest mark in program history (5:24.71).

Other noteworthy performances include junior Courtney Connolly (White Lake, Mich.) winning the 200 Free (2:01.65) and fellow classmate Teyana Johnson (San Antonio) producing a victory in the 1-meter dive, scoring 200.25 points.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 22, 2022) – Mount St. Mary’s swimming & diving suffered a sweep at the hands of the Howard Bison Saturday at the Burr Gymnasium Pool. The defeats mark the first setback in a dual setting for the men this season, while the women drop to 1-4 in the same format.

Howard took the women’s meet by a score of 162-55, while the men defeated the Mount 158.5-62.5.

Despite the final outcome, there were several bright spots for the Mountaineers. Five athletes set new personal records, including Montana Griffith with her 178.95 score in the 1 meter dive for a second place finish. Three 100 yard free competitors earned top times – Ethan Pham (49.56 seconds), Maddy Samuels (56.24) and Elizabeth Fahrney (1:02.26). Jonah Hancock secured a new personal best with a 1:00.45 in the 100 backstroke.

Two more Mountaineers won their individual events. Jason Fitch won the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.43 seconds, while Meghan Speicher took first in the 500 free, finishing in 5:24.55.

The Mount wraps up their regular season next Saturday (Jan. 29) at Loyola.
