Women’s Recap

WASHINGTON (January 29, 2022) – Howard University women’s swimming & diving team came away victorious against crosstown rival Catholic, 186-110.

With the win, HU finished the regular season 3-4 overall while earning its third consecutive victory over the Cardinals, dating back to 2018.

Senior Madison Freeland (Glenside, Pa.), junior Courtney Connolly (White Lake, Mich.), sophomore Michaela Spears (Chicago) and freshman Kelsey Roberson (West Orange, N.J.) capped off the afternoon with a victory in the 400 Free Relay, clocking in at 3:47.94.

Individually, Connolly secured wins in the 200 Free (2:02.13) and 50 Fly (27.61) while Freeland recorded the ninth-fastest mark in school history with a first-place time of 11:12.23 in the 1000 Free.

Spears won the 200 Breast (2:33.00) and finished runner-up in the 100 IM (1:02.87) behind teammate Zaylie-Elizabeth Thompson (1:02.59). Both Bison landed on the all-time leaderboard in the 100 IM, ranking third and fourth, respectively. Thompson also won the 100 Free, producing a 55.45 mark.

Second-year Bison Alana Josey (York, Pa.) also competed in the 100 IM, taking fourth overall with the ninth-fastest time in program history (1:06.18). The Pennsylvania native claimed gold in the 200 Fly, producing a 2:12.83 time.

Junior Breyahna Tyme (Ontario, Canada) finished second in the 200 Back (2:14.53), which sits eighth all-time in school history.

Other notable performances included newcomer Jorden Hill (Birmingham, Ala.) winning the 50 Back (28.09) and fellow classmate Rianna Martin (Coral Springs, Fla.) earning first in the 50 Free (25.52).

On the board, junior Teyana Johnson (San Antonio) secured a pair of victories in the 1-meter dive (240.45) and 3-meter dive (212.25).

On Feb. 22-26, Howard travels to Geneva, Ohio for the NEC Championships.

Men’s Recap

WASHINGTON (January 29, 2022) – Howard University men’s swimming & diving team closed out the regular season with a 211-83 victory over crosstown rival Catholic.

With the win, HU earned its fifth consecutive victory while finishing with a 5-1 mark in dual competition.

Junior Miles Simon (Atlanta) headlined the afternoon, setting a new school record in the 100 IM. The Atlanta native won with a 51.33 time while breaking his previous mark, set back in 2020 (51.68).

Simon also won the 50 Free (20.39) and 200 Back (1:58.04). For his efforts in the 50 Free, he sits second all-time behind his own benchmark (19.95).

Fellow classmate Luke-Kennedy Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas) and freshman Erald Thompson III (Nassau, Bahamas) also competed in the 100 IM, taking third (53.28) and fourth (57.72), respectively, in the event. For their efforts, they placed fourth and 10th on the all-time list, respectively.

L. Thompson came away victorious in the 1000 Free (10:07.01) and 500 Free (4:52.85). His time in the 1000 Free ranks fifth all-time in school history.

Simon, juniors Mark-Anthony Beckles (Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago) and Arion Solomon (Fairburn, Ga.) and sophomore Spencer Miles (Lynchburg, Va.) earned first place in the 400 Free Relay, clocking in at 3:17.77.

Individually, Beckles secured a pair of wins in the 200 Free (1:44.46) and 50 Fly (23.02). His efforts in the 200 Free landed him 10th all-time in program history.

Miles claimed first in the 100 Free, producing a 49.18 mark.

Solomon, fellow classmates T’lez Foulkes (Durham, N.C.) and Reese Samuel (Pittsburgh) and newcomer Tristan Stevens (Chicago) opened the day with a victory in the 400 Medley Relay, recording a time of 3:35.05.

Stevens also won the 50 Back race with a mark of 24.99.

Other notable performances included sophomore Mark-Anthony Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas) winning the 50 Breast (26.44), second-year Bison Niles Rankin (Plymouth Meetings, Pa.) claiming the top spot in the 200 Breast (2:13.59) and rookie Brenton Cooper (Baton Rouge, La.) taking first place in the 200 Fly (2:03.56).

On the board, freshman Isaiah Swilley (Bourbonnais, Ill.) racked up a pair of wins in the 1-meter dive (248.18) and 3-meter dive (239.18). For his efforts in the 1-meter, the Illinois product ranks fourth all-time in school history.

On Feb. 22-26, Howard travels to Geneva, Ohio for the NEC Championships.

Women’s Recap

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Despite posting wins in multiple events, the Catholic University women’s swimming and diving team fell to Division I Howard on Senior Day at the DuFour Center Pool, 186-110.

Catholic began the meet with a thrilling victory, when the team of junior Alexa Hipp, junior Madeline Doucette, freshman Ava Snyder and senior Colleen McDonald outtouched Howard at the wall in the 400-yard medley relay (4:13.22) to win by just .13 seconds.

Doucette also raced to victory in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 31.29.

Hipp had a strong day, adding to her relay victory with a win in the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.68). She also touched second in the 50 back with a time of 28.80.

Snyder showed well during a busy day. In addition to victory in the 400 medley relay, she took home first place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:26.50. She claimed second in the 200 free, falling by just .33 seconds, and was a member of the 400 free relay team that finished second as well (3.58.28).

Senior Madeline Seeley-Hacker claimed third in both the one meter (203.55) and three meter (193.58) diving events.

Senior Kelly Smith swam to second place in the 1000 free distance event, finishing with a time of 11:15.32. She also finished fourth in the 50 back (29.94) and eighth in the 100 individual medley (1:08.75).

Senior Cagney Boyle finished second in the 200 breast (2.35.52) and third in the 100 IM (1:04.88).

The Cardinals now turn their attention to the Landmark Conference Championships on the weekend of Feb. 18-20 at Germantown Indoor Swim Center, where they look to win their third straight conference championship.

Men’s Recap

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University men’s swimming and diving team fell to Division I Howard, 211-83, on Senior Day at DuFour Center Pool.

Senior Ellis Prescott grabbed a pair of runner-up finishes in the distance events, swimming a 4:58.38 in the 500-yard freestyle and a 10:16.84 in the 1000-yard freestyles.

Sophomore Jack Hufner claimed second in the 50 free with a time of 25.16 and touched fourth in the 100 free (50.29). He also was a member of the 400 free relay team (3:20.21) that finished second and a member of the 400 medley relay (3.38.92) team that finished third.

Sophomore Nathan Ober finished second in the 50-yard breastroke with a time of 26.82. He also finished second in the 100-yard individual medley (53:10) and was a member of the team that placed third in the 400 medley relay.

Freshman diver Seth Greer placed second in the three meter competition (218.40) and third in one meter competition (212.40).

Senior Jeffrey Schriefer-Flores grabbed third in the 50-yard backstroke (22.17) and was a member of the 400 free relay team that finished second as well as the 400 medley relay team that finished third.

The Cardinals now turn their attention to the Landmark Conference Championships on the weekend of Feb. 18-20 at Germantown Indoor Swim Center, where they look to win their six straight conference championship.
