Host Team Moves to 5-0 Season at FIU’s Dual-a-Palooza

In the third and final installment of Florida International University’s Dual-a-Palooza, the Rice Owls and FIU Panthers repeated their wins in the morning, but traded opponents. . The meet features four teams (FIU, Rice, FAU, Miami-Fla) that compete simultaneously in three separate sessions. Scoring is in a straight head-to-head dual meet format.

FIU vs. Miami-Fla

FIU  finished out their Dual-A-Palooza with a victory over Miami-Fla, finishing the meet with a final score of 122-83. The Panthers started the first of seven event wins with  the 100 medley relay featuring an all sophomore team of Naomi Ruele, Chase Harris, Letizia Bertelli,  and Ally Mayhew. FIU also won the other relay that was contested on the day, the 400 free relay, with a  team of Ruele, Bertelli, Jenny Deist, and Pereira (3:26.12).

This session saw Kyna Pereira finish first in the 1000 free (10:09.58) and 200 free (1:50.38). These wins finalized Pereira’s 8-0 record for the meet. C-USA swimmer of the week , Jessica Chadwick, took event wins in the 200 breast (2:20.77) and 100 IM (58.63).

This third win for the Panthers gives them a 16 dual meet winning streak.

The Hurricanes still had a strong showing, winning three straight events with Julie Suarez in the 50 free (24.09), Angela Algee  in the 200 fly (2:02.82) and Christina Leander in the 100 back (56.53).

This meet makes two straight losses for the Hurricanes. Of the day’s results, head coach Andrew Kershaw stated in a press release “I’m proud of our effort and disappointed with the losses, but I know that’s going to make this team even more motivated to train harder. The focus remains on ACC Championships and NCAA Championships at the end of the year.”

Rice vs. FAU

In the battle of the Conference USA Owls, Rice came out on top 139-55. The teams split the relays with FAU winning the 100 medley and Rice winning the 400 free. Rice took the top spot in 10 of the 11 contested events.

Rice went 1-2-3 in the 200 breast with Marie-Claire Schillinger, Kaitlyn Swinney,and Dani Gordon. Schillinger also won the 50 breast and was a member of the second place 100 medley relay.

Jaecey Parham placed high the sprint events: first in the  50 free (24.36) and second in the 50 breast (31.00)

  • Hanna Huston– 1000 free (10:10.32), 200 free (1:53.77)
  • Alicia Caldwell– 100 back  (56.75)
  • Kaitlin Benjamin– 200 fly (2:06.53)
  • Shelly Patton– 100 IM (58.72)
