Candidates bidding to host the 2023 Pan American Games are now set, as both Santiago, Chile and Buenos Aires, Argentina have submitted their respective applications.
Both cities will have had sizable international competition experience by the time the host is determined by PASO later this year. Buenos Aires is the site of the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, while Santiago hosted the South American Games in 2014. The latter also bid for the 2019 Pan American Games hosting duties, but lost to Lima, Peru. Both Buenos Aires and Santiago are now tasked with confirming their applications by April 30th with a $500,000 (USD) deposit.
Says a PASO representative, “Argentina seeks to host the Pan American Games again at the city that saw their birth, Buenos Aires, in 1951, 66 years ago.”
“Santiago de Chile is nominated for the second time in a row and is fully confident it fulfills all necessary conditions to organise the main sports feast of the Americas, offering to be excellent hosts.”
Argentina was originally in the running to host the 2021/2023 FINA World Aquatic Championships, but withdrew itself from the race in 2015.
