The 3rd cluster of the 2016 FINA World Cup Series kicked off today, with the first meet being held at the OCBC Aquatics Centre in Singapore. Aussie Olympic champ Kyle Chalmers jumped in on the action today, going up against Russian rocket Vlad Morozov, the current series points leader and victor of the first 2 clusters, in the 100 free.
Morozov held off a late charge from Chalmers, winning the race in 45.92. He then went on to win the 100 IM (50.70) and take bronze in the 50 breast (26.85) behind Felipe Lima (26.19) and Roland Schoeman (26.62).
Chalmers, on the other hand, walked with the 100 free silver, setting a new Junior World Record of 46.61 in the process.
On the women’s side, Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu swam her usual monster schedule. She competed in 6 events throughout the session, winning gold in 4 of them.

In the 100 fly, Hosszu broke Jeanette Ottesen‘s streak of World Cup wins against her. Over the last 5 consecutive World Cup stops, Ottesen had picked up the gold in that event, but Hosszu edged her out by hundredths this time with a 56.02 to Ottesen’s 56.08.
Hosszu also placed 2nd in the 50 back (26.21) and 4th in the 800 free (8:28.59) today. Even though she missed the medals, the 800 free gold still went to Hungary, as her teammate Boglarka Kapas won the race in 8:17.54.
Additional Event Winners:
- Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson was just 4 hunderdths shy of her own World Record in the 100 breast, winning the race in 1:02.40.
- Daiya Seto was a double event winner on the men’s side, taking the 200 fly (1:49.53) and 400 IM (4:04.60). In the 200 fly, he took down World Record holder Chad Le Clos, who finished 2nd in 1:50.29.
- Le Clos turned around to pick up a gold of his own in the 50 fly, posting a 22.33 to edge out South African teammate Roland Schoeman (22.44).
- Aussie backstroke standouts Emily Seebohm and Mitch Larkin each won their back races today. Seebohm won the 50 back in 26.18, while Larkin took the 100 back in 50.25.
- womens 50 free- Jeanette Ottesen may have come up short of the win in the 100 fly today, but she bounced back to win gold in the 50 free with a 24.07.
- The Ukraine’s Mykhailo Romanchuk won the 400 free by over 2 seconds, clocking a 3:40.64.
- Germany’s Marco Koch put up a strong back half to dominate the men’s 200 breast in 2:01.41.
