The postponed Olympic Games are still set to start on July 23rd, which means athletes are soaking up every opportunity they can to prepare for the world’s biggest competitive sporting event.
Although we have seen some cancellations and postponements of meets, there is still a robust list of happenings filling the calendar for the month of February.

Manchester international meet, behave.
And we wonder why the numbers are horrific, talk of the schools not going back till May yet Manchester International meet is going ahead. Manchester aquatics centre should be a vaccine site not hosting a meet that foreign athletes can attend. Athletes from all over the country coming to Manchester, thought we were in lockdown.
Whilst contact sports like football and rugby can happen, swimming seems relatively acceptable.
The basic principle seems to be if someone’s being paid to do it, it can happen. These guys are pros, ergo it’s within the government’s parameters.

The 10th Trophy “Citta di Milano” (ITA) has been moved to 23/4
Manchester International meet, only for British swimmers who train at the National Centres/Funded athletes and swimmers on the swim England programme. British Swimming/Swim England have even asked international athletes who train at Loughborough over British Swimmers who have qualified for British Champs and need the practice. Didn’t think international swimmers could swim for Team GB!! Not fair giving them the chance and not the British/English swimmers.

Of course it is unfair. However, it is by my understanding an invitation only meet which means the fastest swimmers in the country should be invited to compete to raise the standard of competition? A lot of swimmers will have qualified for british champs as those meets are quite large. If they allowed all of those swimmers to compete here then they wouldn’t be able to keep everyone safe by following the covid restrictions I would have thought. Seems fair to me.
Totally agree SD642. You are spot on. Covid protocols restrict numbers and different home nation rules mean some can and cannot travel. Only athletes on the approved government return to training lists can compete at this time. All professional ‘international’ athletes are also allowed to compete in all sports in the UK subject to Covid restrictions.
Wonder who is going to swim in Manchester. Most UK swimmers have been out of water for at least a month.
