Day 2 of the Dutch Short Course National Championships saw Femke Heemskerk once again on her groove. After winning the 200 free last night, Heemskerk went after the 200 IM, smashing her own national record set just last month. Heemskerk was 2:06.88 to take about a half-second off that mark. She also qualified to swim at the Short Course World Championships in Doha and moves to #3 in the world this year, behind only Katinka Hosszu and Caitlin Leverenz.

After Heemskerk won the 200 free yesterday, it looked like she could put together a great 100 free individually, but swam that 200 IM instead on day 2. That opened up the 100 free for Ranomi Kromowidjojo.  The Olympic gold medal-winning sprinter went 52.07 to take home the event by about a second and a half.

Also joining the World Champs team was Moniek Nijhuis, who went 29.90 to win the 50 breast and hit the qualifying standard for Worlds. That was also a meet record.

14-year-old Marrit Steenbergen was another impressive swimmer on the day. She broke two of the Netherlands national age records. She won the B final of the 100 free in 54.57 just before Kromowidjojo’s victory, and then broke another age record in the 200 IM (2:15.86) while swimming in the same A final as Heemskerk.

After winning the 100 fly on day 1, Inge Dekker doubled up with the 200 fly title on day 2. Known more as a sprinter, Dekker was still a good enough all-around butterflyer to win the 200, going 2:11.26. Though she dropped off quite a bit over the final 100, she still won by about four seconds.

Mike Marissen won twice, taking the 100 fly (53.66) and 200 IM (1:59.26). In the latter event, Kyle Stolk finished second and broke an under-18 national record with his 2:00.07.

One more meet record went down, and that was to Ferry Weertman, who went 3:44.22 to win the men’s 400 free.

Other winners:

  • Men’s 100 breast: Bram Dekker, 1:00.17
  • Women’s 100 back: Kira Toussaint, 59.23
  • Men’s 50 free: Jasper van Mierlo, 22.00
  • Men’s 200 back: Marco Uppelschoten, 1:59.70

Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson swam for nearly twenty years. Then, Jared Anderson stopped swimming and started writing about swimming. He's not sick of swimming yet. Swimming might be sick of him, though.
