HANOVER, N.H. — The Big Green won three events as the women’s swimming and diving team competed at Karl Michael Pool for the first time this season Saturday afternoon. Dartmouth fell 189.50-109.50 to Cornell and 215-83 to Harvard.
“Our women started the meet with great energy and did a good job carrying it through the entire competition,” said head coach Milana Socha. “It’s not easy to have a strong presence with such a small roster and they found a way to make it happen. Although we didn’t win, we saw a lot of positive things. Julianne’s win in the 200 IM and Lindsey’s win the 200 fly were big moments and had the crowd on their feet. Chiara showed today that she can be one of the best divers in the league and I’m excited to watch her continued progress this season. We get back at it on Monday looking forward to continuing to build from what we’ve learned into our mid-season invite.”
Freshman diver Chiara Lopach, who showcased her abilities with a program-best score earlier this season in a scrimmage, was victorious on the 3-meter board with a zone-qualifying score of 284.60, besting divers from both Ivy League opponents.
Fellow freshmen Julianne Jones and Lindsey Drumm also won events for the Big Green. Jones was victorious in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.77, while Drumm was first in the 200 fly at 2:07.47. Jones also helped Dartmouth defeat Cornell in the 200 breast, placing third with a 2:22.79 mark.
Mary Howley allowed the Big Green to top the Big Red in the 100 back – she placed second in the event with a time of 58.02.
Christina Cianciolo placed third in the 1000 free with a time of 10:40.68, coming second against both Harvard and Cornell.
Dartmouth is back in action on Thursday, Dec. 1 traveling to Ohio for the Miami Invitational.
Harvard is very thin in the distance events. I could see Princeton/ Yale / Penn scoring a lot of points against them this season in those events.
