Although Rikako Ikee missed the individual 100m free Olympic standard, the 20-year-old leukemia survivor successfully added another relay event to her surprising Tokyo qualification. The sprint maestro still has a shot in the individual 50m free coming up over the next 2 days of competition.
Ryosuke Irie added the 200m back to his 100m back qualification, as did Kanako Watanabe in the breaststroke discipline, while Kosuke Hagino snared his first and only individual event qualification in the men’s 200m IM. The defending 400m IM Olympic champion opted out of that event and also dropped the 200m back at the last minute.
