Back at the Austin Pro Swim in January, Matt Grevers dropped a 53.31 in the 100m backstroke. He said he was barely back into training at that point, that he did one hard week of work, then backed off for the Austin Pro Swim. Since then he’s been nose-to-the-grind-stone.
At the Mesa Pro Swim Grevers notched another 100 back win in the series, 54.1. Post race, in the media zone, he was sober about his challenge this summer against Cal stars Jacob Pebley and Ryan Murphy to make the 2017 U.S. World Championship Team. If you make Team USA in the 100m backstroke, it’s essentially a relay medal.
Prediction: In January I predicted Grevers would swim 52.4 or faster in the 100m backstroke at the U.S. Nationals this summer. I think that’ll be enough to make the 2017 U.S. Worlds Team. I’m sticking by my prediction. What do you think?

No….I named my daughter Melveeeena of course.
***my daughter is Bayley, a family name (on my wife’s side), but I did push for Melveeeeeena. I lost that battle.
LOL! I actually have a co-worker named Melvina! I like the name Bayley, and by the way, I like the name Skylar very much; I’m not a fan of the name Boomer, and I’m not sure about Arlen for a boy, but obviously all that really matters is that the kids are loved and healthy. I was just noting that all 3 swimmers gave their children unusual names. Thanks for your reply, Mel!

Even without Plummer there’s some tough competition. Of course there are Murphy and Pebley, but John Shebat could be a factor with the year he’s had. Then there are a bunch of young competitors that could just pull off an upset, like Michael Taylor, Sean Lehane, etc. I think Murphy, Grevers, and Pebley still battle it out for top two, and Shebet the most likely to upset them.
I’d love to see someone break through in June. It’s new quad, time to step up…
