The Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina announced in July the construction of a fourth pool to add to their complex.
The $8.2 million bid from Shelco Construction will be connected to the existing GAC and will provide an additional 19 short course lanes and 8 long course lanes. The addition will enhance the facility’s offerings, including increased lane space for various teams and recreational members.
The Greensboro Aquatic Center first opened in August 2011. The 78,323-square-foot indoor facility features 3 (soon-to-be 4) main pools to accommodate the needs of all major aquatic sports- swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, water polo, and others.
Construction was scheduled to begin on August 7th and is projected to be completed by June 2019.
USA Swimming selected Greensboro to host 2 USA Swimming National meets this winter, totaling 4 major national meets for the 2018-2019 season:
- 2018 Winter National Championships (Nov. 28- Dec.1)
- 2018 Winter Junior National Championships- East (Dec. 5-8)
- 2019 NCAA Division III Championships (Mar. 20-23)
- 2019 YMCA Short Course National Championships (Apr. 1-5)
The 2018 Winter National Championships will be in long course meters and serve as an opportunity for swimmers to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Trials.

Our community has two indoor short course pools, but no long course facilities. There is plenty of room at our high school for such a natatorium but we will have to convince our people that it will sort of pay for itself.
How about more lockerroom space? Even now this is very limited as compared to the amount of pool space. Indy has much the same problem. I realize it ultimately comes down to $. Over budget= cut lockerroom space and seating. Otherwise, both pools (GAC and Indy) are great swimming-wise.
Very good point. The number of showers at GAC are laughable for a major event.
From the drawings, it looks like they’ll be adding 4 showers and 6 toilets per bathroom (3 toilets, 3 urinals for me) in new bathrooms by the new pool. Helpful but certainly not enough.
This is huge and will put GAC on par with Indy by having two indoor LC pools.

This is a game changer because they will have long course warm up opportunities while running a long course meet. I hope masters nationals is held here again soon. Despite having 4 25 yard pools at 2016 Nationals (2 competition, 2 warm up), it still got quite crowded so another 19 SCY lanes would be great!
You got your wish, short course USMS nationals will be held there spring 2021.
So sad that Austin and Round Rock ISDs have 0 indoor swimming pools. everybody is so against funding for an indoor pool. Indoor shooting ranges are proliferating, but again, you have to defend yourself against imigrants, so that is understanding.

Now if they would only build accommodations for all of those teams coming to the complex
GAC still needs to figure out how to use media like email, Facebook, their website, and paper to inform their users when lanes will be available for free swim. Not just “two lanes will be available in the diving well” at all times. Show up to swim only to discover that 80% of the lanes are in use for team practices. Not even a White Board!
And believe it or not, they didn’t even inform the swimmers of their Ground Breaking ceremony and originally published the wrong pool plans on their website.
