GMX7 Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming – 2/10/2023

In our GMX7 Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming series, we celebrate swimmers of every age and experience level with age group profiles of some recent results.

Alexa Briseno, 12, New Albany Aquatic Club (NAAC-OH): Briseno picked up her first NCSA Championship cut in the girls’ 200 backstroke at the Mason Manta Rays’ February Invitational, clocking 2:05.76 to dip under the 2:05.99 standard while also moving into fourth this season in the 11-12 age group. The New Albany Aquatic Club member also chopped .05 off her PB in the 100 back in 58.33, maintaining her place as the fifth-fastest swimmer in the age group this season, and added best times in the 200 free (1:59.80) and 500 free (5:16.81).

Syunta Lee, 13, West Coast Aquatics (WEST-PN): Lee put up a blistering time of 4:02.41 in the 400 IM at the WEST Valentine Invitational, ranking him eighth all-time among 13-year-old boys in the event. Lee added best times in the 50 free (22.67) and 100 free (48.85), and came within .02 of his January best time with a 1:52.93 swim in the 200 back. His time of 1:52.91 from the Washington State Senior Championships ranks second among 13-year-old boys this season.

Rowyn Wilber, 13, Clovis Swim Club (CLOV-CC): Wilber took on an incredibly difficult schedule at the DART Super-League Winter Championships and delivered some impressive performances, highlighted by a new best time of 1:54.72 in the 200 free and a near-best of 4:27.97 in the 400 IM. In the 400 IM, Wilber set a best time of 4:26.76 back in December, which ranks fifth among 13-year-old girls in the 2022-23 season.

Cohen Osborn, 16, Metro East Titans Swimming (METS-IL): Osborn dropped more than three seconds in the 200 free at the Southern Illinois Swim Championships in Edwardsville, clocking 1:43.46 to set a new Edwardsville High School record. Osborn, who was racing the 200 free in high school competition for the first time, had previously been 1:46.21 in the event in club swimming. The 16-year-old also won the 100 fly (53.67) as EHS won the team title.

Maddie McAlister, 17, Barracudas Open-Water & Select Swimming/Denton High School (BOSS-NT): McAlister became Denton High School’s lone state championship qualifier by earning Swimmer of the Meet honors at the UIL Region 2-5A Championship meet this week. McAlister set a new Denton High Record in the 50 free, clocking a best of 24.53 to break a 30-year-old record by .01 to place second. In the 100 free, she claimed victory in a best of 53.81.

Aiden Zhou, 12, Santa Clara Swim Club (SCSC-PC): Zhou produced lifetime bests in the 50 back (26.14) and 100 back (56.72) at the DACA C/B/A+ meet over the weekend, moving him into third and fifth, respectively, in the boys’ 11-12 age group this season. Zhou also matched his best in the 50 free right on the money in 23.82, a time that ranks 19th in the age group in 2022-23.
