German C’ships Day 3: Wellbrock Posts Another 1500 Under 15:00

2019 GERMAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The reigning 10k open water world champion and 1500m freestyle world champion Florian Wellbrock was in the pool once again tonight in Berlin, following up on his 800m free victory from night 2.

Competing on the penultimate night of the 2019 German Swimming Championships, the 21-year-old fired off a swim of 14:57.30 to manhandle the 1500m free field and add another national title to his ever-growing resume. Although his time was well off the 14:36.54 he produced in Gwangju, his outing this evening would have finished 7th in that elite final.

Another World Championships swimmer straight from Gwangju in the water tonight was Marco Koch. The breaststroking world champion from 2015 punched the clock tonight in a mark of 2:10.15 in his signature 200m distance. Koch finished 5th in the 2breast in Gwangju, producing a time of 2:07.60, the 2nd fastest time of his career.

For the women, Annika Bruhn won the 200m free in a mark of 1:58.07, leading a charge of 4 women all under the 1:59 threshold. Joining here was Julia Mrozinski in silver with a time of 1:58.07, while Reva Foos rounded out the top 3 on the podium in 1:58.45.

Sarah Kohler, last night’s 40om free winner, in addition to night 1’s 1500m gold medalist, finished 4th in the 200m tonight in 1:58.56.

Additional Notes:

  • Poul Zellmann won the men’s 200m free in 1:47.55.
  • The women’s 200m IM saw Zoe Vogelmann take gold, but also earn a new German Age Record with her podium-topping mark of 2:13.32.
  • Nadine Laemmler racked up the 2back victory in 2:10.97.
  • David Thomasberger was the men’s 200m fly winner in 1:56.05, a mark within .04 of his own lifetime best.
  • The women’s 50m fly was topped by Aliena Schmidtke‘s time of 26.37, while the women’s 50m free was won by Jessica Felsner in 25.03.
