The George Washington men’s swimming and diving team defeated Georgetown in dominating fashion on Friday at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool, winning 14 of 16 events on the day to post a 188.50-105.50 victory.
Four Colonials grabbed a pair of individual victories, led by senior Andrea Bolognesi and sophomore Alexander Auster, who added two relay victories on the day.
“I was very pleased to see our team perform so well coming off of a tough week of hard work on our annual training trip,” said head coach James Winchester. “We had really great energy throughout the meet and that translated into strong performances in the pool. With a quick turnaround, we need to rest up and bring that same level of energy to the pool tomorrow when we take on George Mason.”
Bolognesi grabbed his first solo triumph in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 56.99 to handily defeat the field. Bolognesi went on to win the 100 butterfly in 50.12.
Auster’s first individual victory came in the 50 freestyle when he posted a time of 21.50 ahead of junior Gustav Hokfelt in third (22.15). Auster later led a strong GW showing in the 100 free, touching the wall in 47.28. Junior Adam Drury followed in second (47.28) and newcomer Moritz Fath tied for third (48.21).
Bolognesi and Auster joined forces with Hokfelt and freshman Emils Pone to begin the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay (1:33.71). The team of freshmen Andrew Cho and Max Forstenhaeusler, sophomore Josh Monacelli and senior Ben Fitch followed in second (1:36.17). Bolognesi and Auster wrapped their victories in the 200 free relay, this time teaming up with Drury and Hokfelt to post a time of 1:25.49. Fath, sophomore Patrick Lersch and juniors Jarvus Pennington and Aneil Srivastava took third in that event in 1:27.86.
In his first competition as a Colonial, Fath claimed a pair of wins, the first coming in the 200 free in 1:41.88 ahead of Drury in second (1:43.63). Fath later led a GW sweep of the 500 free, claiming the victory in 4:44.43 as senior Liam Huffman (4:47.29) and freshman Shawn Lemarie (4:47.44) placed second and third, respectively.
Cho continued GW’s strong day with a pair of top finishes, the first in the 200 backstroke (1:50.82) as Pone came in third (1:56.64). Cho went on to win the 200 IM in 1:56.28.
In addition to helping the Colonials to both relay triumphs, Hokfelt posted a victory in the 100 back in 50.86 ahead of Cho in second (51.64).
Monacelli and Lemarie rounded out GW’s top swimming performances on the day. Monacelli won the 200 breast (2:08.53) as Forstenhaeusler took second (2:10.25), and Lemarie won the 1,000 free (9:51.16) with senior Liam Huffman coming in third (10:01.11). Monacelli added a third-place finish in the 200 fly (1:56.67) to wrap his strong day in the pool.
On the boards, sophomore Jake Ortiz set new personal bests in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events, winning the 1-meter with a score of 282.75 and taking second in the 3-meter with 284.25.
The Colonials close their home season on Saturday when Revolutionary Rival George Mason visits the Charles E. Smith Center for GW’s Senior Day meet. Diving competition begins at 10 a.m. with swimming commencing at noon. Senior Day ceremonies will begin at 11:50 a.m.
