Gemmell, Jaeger, Cordes Highlight Men’s Academic All-District Teams

The 2013 edition of the Capital One At-Large All-District Teams is made up of some huge names, with 75 swimmers among the 216 First-Team honorees who will now advance to seek All-American selection.

The at-large class, of which swimming is a part, includes 14 sports:

Nominees come from each school’s Sports Information Departments, who are allowed to nominate up to three men and three women from across the 14 at-large sports. Requirements include being an important part of the team’s success (the equivalent of a starter or top reserve in a team sport), and have a 3.30 minimum cumulative GPA.

The men’s swimming list is a veritable who’s-who of the sport. It includes Georgia’s Andrew Gemmell who has a 3.94 GPA in Economics and Michigan’s Connor Jaeger, who has a 3.36 GPA in Mechanical Engineering at the Michigan engineering juggernaut. Those were the two American representatives in the 1500 meter freestyle at the Olympics, and Jaeger was the 2013 NCAA Champion in both the 500 free and 1650 free.

Other swimmers with big name recognition include Bradley deBorde from Florida, who was 5th in the 50 free at NCAA’s, and his teammate Cameron Martin. The SEC was also represented by Auburn’s Kyle Owens, who swept the conference titles in the 100 and 200 backstroke, and Tennessee’s Brent Sterling, an NCAA Championship qualifying diver.

Kevin Cordes, who did was sickeningly fast at NCAA’s in breaking U.S. Open, American, and NCAA breaststroke records in both the 100 and the 200, makes the team with a 3.5 GPA as a sophomore. Another sophomore breaststroker on the list is Jaeger’s teammate Richard Funk, a Canadian who was 3rd in the 100 breast and 7th in the 200 breast at NCAA’s, also made the team. He’s has an impressive 3.7 GPA with a major of Neuroscience.

USC’s Alex Lendrum, who has been heaped with academic honors after an impressive four-year career with the Trojans and a two-time co-captain, was named to the All-District team for the second straight season as well.

Division III powerhouse men’s programs were well represented on this list. The top 5 finishing teams on the men’s side accounted for an astonishing 8 members of this list. That includes three swimmers from 5th-place Emory (Miller Douglas, Peter O’Brien, and Richard Upton); one from 4th-place Johns Hopkins (Dylan Davis); and two-each from runners-up Denison (Spencer Fronk and Carlos Maciel) and National Champions Kenyon (Curtis Ramsey and Andrew Chevalier).
