The Gardner-Webb women’s swim team squared off with the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville today collecting their first victory of the year, while the men’s team battled each other in an intersquad. The Runnin’ Bulldogs women collected 202 points while UNC Asheville finished with 176.

In 10 events, the women won five.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs showed well in the 3×100 Butterfly Relay as they placed first and second with times of 2:57.33 and 2:59.21 respectively. Gardner-Webb continued their dominance is the 3×100 Breaststroke Relay taking the two top spots finishing with times of 3:27.02 and 3:30.44. Again, in the 400 Medley Relay GWU finished in the one and two spots as they finished with times of 3:59.40 and 4:01.27.

After the meet, head coach Mike Simpson stated, “the enthusiasm was great. We raced really well. But, there is still a ton of things to keep working on.”

Behind multiple quality performances, coach Simpson also noted, “I loved how everyone got behind each other. We have great team chemistry which adds a lot to the equation.”

The Runnin’ Bulldogs return to the pool next as they are set to compete against Campbell and Old Dominion University in a tri-meet at Campbell University on Friday, Oct. 13 at 3:00 PM.

In the closest meet with Gardner-Webb in program history, the UNC Asheville swimming team almost prevailed on Friday as the Bulldogs fell 202-176 at the Bost Pool.

Meet Highlights

Despite losing by 26 points in the 2017-18 season opener, it was Asheville’s closest meet with Gardner Webb in program history. The previous closest result was last year when UNC Asheville fell by 98 points in Boiling Springs.

The Bulldogs were led by Skylar RoganCatherine Allen and Stephanie Smith in Asheville’s first-ever all-relay meet. The Bulldog trio along with Adee Weller claimed the top spot in the 800 freestyle relay as they clocked in with a 7:53.64 time.

Including the 800 freestyle relay, Asheville’s “A” Team won five of the 10 total events on the schedule. The final two events were labeled as exhibition, and UNC Asheville won the 400 freestyle (4 x 100) to cap off the season opener for Asheville.

Smith along with Emily Werth and Alejandra Sanchez Garcia claimed the number one position in the 3 x 100 backstroke relay. The trio earned 14 team points as they out-raced the closest competition by over three seconds.

The Bulldogs continued to take home first place as Jessica WoolfeMorgan Rulevich, Weller and Rogan downed the fastest Runnin’ Bulldog relay team in the 500-yard freestyle by over six seconds.

Weller, Smith and Rogan capped off their first meet of the season with a victory in the 3 x 500 freestyle. Along with 14 team points, they out-raced the GWU competition by over 17 seconds.

What’s Next?

The Bulldogs will take two weeks off as they will then return home to host UNC Wilmington on Oct. 21 inside the Justice Center Pool at 10 a.m.
