Tallahassee-based Brandon Chason has made a verbal commitment to join the Runnin’ Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb University beginning in the fall of 2016. Chason is a senior at Lawton Chiles High School and swims for Area Tallahassee Aquatic Club. At the 2014 Florida High School Class 3A Championships, Chason placed fifth in the 500 free and 16th in the 100 back. He also swam on Lawton Chiles’ 400 free relay.
Chason’s best events aren’t on the high school program, though. The longer the race the better for Chason. He has earned Winter Juniors qualifying times in the 1000 yard and 800 meter freestyles and finished top-8 in both the 800 and 1500 at the USA Swimming Futures Championships in West Lafayette, Indiana this past summer. Chason’s top times are:
SCY | LCM | |
1650/1500 | 16:03.26 | 16:20.10 |
1000/800 | 9:25.24 | 8:30.69 |
500/400 | 4:36.45 | 4:07.34 |
200 free | 1:45.37 | 1:59.00 |
400 IM | 4:13.14 | 4:53.15 |
200 back | 1:55.60 | 2:13.81 |
Chason will bring much-needed distance prowess to Gardner-Webb. His 1650 time would have scored at seventh place in the 2015 CCSA Championships and been on the A/B-final bubble in the 500 free. The Runnin’ Bulldogs’ only points in the mile came from now-senior Luke Denman; Chason’s arrival will add much-needed new blood to the longer end of distance group.
