FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State women’s swim team hosted a quad-meet in the Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon. Fresno Pacific, University of the Pacific and UC Santa Cruz competed in the meet. Freshman Manuela Mendolicchio remains undefeated in the 100 Breaststroke this season with a time of 1:03.05. She also remains undefeated in the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:15.24. Mendolicchio led the Bulldogs in the 100 IM with a fifth place finish (1:00.50).

RESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women’s swimming & diving team defeated Fresno State for the first time in program history on Saturday. The women and the men were also competing against University of the Pacific and UC Santa Cruz at the Fresno State Aquatics Center.

The women downed the Bulldogs 152-141 in the dual meet and also defeated UCSC 239-57, while Pacific earned a 156-136 victory over the Sunbirds. The men earned a dominating 233-61 win over the Banana Slugs, but fell to the Tigers 169-124.

“Obviously it was a huge day for our women,” said head coach Josh Christensen. “We knew what we needed to do and the ladies came through in a big way. Beating a Mountain West team says a lot about the level of program we’re becoming.”

Bavindeep Basra, Daria Belova and freshman Laura Fornshell led the way for the Sunbirds. All three earned victories on the day.

Basra won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:05.19 and was third in the 100 IM at 59.68. The junior was just off her PR in the 200 fly and her time marked an NCAA B-cut.

Belova was victorious in the 100 butterfly with a touch of 56.45, was second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.48 (B-cut) and also took second in the 100 IM at 58.50.

Fornshell won the 1000 freestyle in dominating fashion at 10:18.73, which was good for a new FPU record and a B-cut.  She also placed third in the 500 free with a time of 5:03.17 (B-cut) and took fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:55.32.

Olivia Hynes provided the Sunbirds with a solid swim in the 50 freestyle, touching at 23.96 for a PR, an NCAA B-cut and a second-place finish. Samantha Woo placed second in the 100 free at 52.50, while Olga Melnikova was third in the 100 backstroke at 59.76.

The 200 medley relay of Basra, Belova, Madison McGinnis and Hynes took second with a time of 1:45.27 (B-cut), while the 400 free relay of Woo, Fornshell, Meghan Go and Hynes was second at 3:32.15.

“Daria, Bavi, Olivia, and Sammie really lead the way,” noted Christensen. “They’ve grown so much as leaders and it’s really starting to pay off competitively. Seeing Laura step up the way she did, as a freshman, is really exciting. Breaking a school record in a practice suit is a big deal.”

For diving, Paige Le won the 1-meter event with a score of 147.85 and Leanna Wiens won the 3-meter event with 140.50 points. Both provided important points for the Sunbirds.

On the boards for the men, Duston Gragg took the win in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 298.80 and also won the 3-meter with 375.65 points.

“We’ve shown significant growth in our diving program, Duston is obviously the leader and he was excellent today,” said Christensen. “Paige, as a freshman, is only going to improve for our ladies. I’m excited to see Teresa continue to grow the diving program.”

On the men’s swimming side, Maxim Shcherbakov continued his dominance in the breaststroke events to pick up two wins and Collin Moore was impressive in multiple for the Sunbirds.

Shcherbakov won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.44 (B-cut), while Matheus Misquito touched at 56.41 in second and Alex Shibata came in at 58.86 in third. Shcherbakov also won the 200 breaststroke at 2:02.12 and was second in the 100 IM with a time of 53.09.

Moore placed second in the 1000 free at 9:57.04, while teammate Michael Chiodo took third with a touch of 10:00.62. Moore also took second in the 200 fly at 1:56.83 and second in the 500 free with a time of 4:48.56.

Other strong swims came from Austin Hussain, who finished second in the 200 free with a touch of 1:43.65, Kyle Jones, who finished second in the 200 backstroke at 1:56.33 and was third in the 100 backstroke at 53.50, and Luka Barisic, who placed third in the 50 free at 21.31.

For the relays, the men’s 200 medley relay of Barisic, Shcherbakov, Moore and Hussain placed second with a touch of 1:33.71.

“The men were really solid across the board,” said Christensen. “We lost three very close races at the start of the meet and we need to learn to win those. That being said, we’re showing great progression as we move through the season. We should be in good position for some fast swimming in three weeks at the UNLV invite.”

The Sunbirds will compete next at the UNLV Invite on Dec. 1-3 in Las Vegas.
