Freshman Lam Triples In Oregon State Intrasquad Debut

NCAA rookie Megan Lam went 3-for-3 in individual events to highlight the Oregon State Orange & Black Intrasquad meet.

Despite Lam’s triple, the Black team managed to pull off the win, overcoming Orange’s Lam and former Pac-12 champ Sammy Harrison.

Lam won the 200 fly early in an incredibly tight finish. Leading by just .06 seconds at the 150, Lam outlasted Brooke Meyer to win the race 2:10.02 to 2:10.10.

Lam would wait for the final two individual events of the day to pick up her final pair of wins. First she went 58.73 in the 100 fly, once again touching out Meyer (58.82). One event later, Lam went 2:10.21 to win the 200 IM and continue a furious Orange comeback.

But the comeback fell short, even with Orange winning the 400 free relay. Black took 2nd and 3rd in the event to win the meet 122-119.

Backstroker Amani Amr was the difference-maker for Black, sweeping the 100 and 200 backstrokes. She was 59.33 and 2:07.80, respectively.

Black also swept the breaststrokes, with Corrine Shigeta going 1:07.65 to take the 100 and Czsarina Isleta winning the 200 in 2:24.03.

The top swims time-wise came from Sammy Harrison, who is the team’s leader as a senior. Harrison won the 200 free (1:53.46) and 500 free (5:06.97), both by wide margins. With the intrasquad format not including the 1000 free, Harrison was forced to swim down to the 100 free, where she nearly pulled off the win as well. Fellow senior Constance Toulemonde managed to nip Harrison for the title 53.48 to 53.54.

In the other sprint free race, junior Anni Hecker picked up the win, going 24.88 to take the 50 free.

Oregon State hosts Pac-12 rivals Arizona State next weekend in Bob Bowman‘s first meet as the Sun Devil head coach.
