Freestyler and Butterflier Shelby Villemaire Commits to Vermont

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Shelby Villemaire, a senior at Riverview High School in Florida, has verbally committed to the University of Vermont.

At the 2021 Florida High School Girls’ Regional Meet for Class 4A, Villemaire finished 10th in the 500 free and 17th in the 50 free.

Villemaire also competes for the Sarasota Tsunami Swim Team. At the 2022 Southern Zone South Sectional Championships, she finished 24th in the 200m fly, with a time of 2:27.76. She finished 16th in the 500 free and 21st in the 1000 free at the 2022 Florida Swimming Spring Senior Championships.

Best short-course yards times:

  • 50 free: 25.48
  • 100 free: 54.05
  • 200 free: 1:54.35
  • 500 free: 5:06.43
  • 100 fly: 59.10
  • 200 fly: 2:08.81

Vermont is a member of the America East conference. At the 2022 women’s America East Championships, Vermont placed 3rd, scoring its highest number of points ever for the meet with 677. At that meet and with her best times, Villemaire could’ve made the B finals of the 200 free, 500 free, 100 fly, and 200 fly.

The Vermont women have performed well this season, with a winning record in dual meets of 5:3. They also came in 1st out of 7 teams at the Rhode Island Invite. At that invite, the Vermont women set four pool records, including Hally Laney’s record in the 100 fly of 55.74.

So far this season, Vermont has a relatively deep butterfly program, led by Laney. In fact, only two of the six top Vermont 100 butterfliers with faster times than Villemaire are seniors, and many are freshmen and sophomores. While Villemaire could add depth to the 100 fly, she might perform better in the 200 fly, where only Laney and Miranda Schuman have posted a faster time than her this season.

Villemaire could also assist the team in the mid-distance free events. Her best time would make her the 5th-fastest 200 freestyler on the team this season, behind senior Mina Poppas, sophomore Jackie House, sophomore Ella Church, and freshman Dayle Snively. The same four swimmers are also the top 500 freestylers on the team, though Villemaire also has plenty of time to climb the ranks, given that she hasn’t even joined the team yet.

Villemaire joins Gwen Lister, Lauren Clark, Zoe Webster, Havana Layton, Jess Drozdowski, and Staja Szukala in the class of 2027. The commits have a range of strengths, from sprint freestylers to breaststrokers. Clark and Drozdowski also perform well in butterfly, making potential training partners for Villemaire.
