Three-time Olympic medalist Regan Smith dazzled the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials crowd in Indianapolis, Indiana, reclaiming her 100 meter backstroke World Record stopping the clock at 57.13.
Coming off of an intense season of Pro Swim Series performances, Regan could clearly rip 57-second 100 backstrokes anytime she wanted, and Olympic Trials fans saw that in the prelims. Regan controlled the prelims race stopping the clock at 57.93. In the semi-final, Regan skilfully swam under American Record pace at the 50 meter mark, flipping in 28.02. Regan charged home in 29.45, trimming .04 seconds off her American Record with a 57.47. This put Regan in a great position to chase the Word Record, being only .14 seconds from making history.
Regan wowed fans in the final, chasing down NBC Sports’ TV World Record line. In the final, she was out lightning fast, under her personal best and Kaylee McKeown’s World Record pace at the 50 meter mark, transitioning in 27.94. Regan fought home in 29.19, breaking the World Record by .2 seconds with a 57.13.
Regan will face-off with the 2020 Defending Olympic Champion, Australia’s Kaylee McKeown, at the Olympic Games in Pairs, which will be one of the most anticipated races this summer.
