TCU has announced their spring additions to what should be a stellar incoming class, and among them is Florida State transfer Anthony McMurry. He’s the second transfer we know about from that program that has a new head coach (after Elizabeth Pepper, who is still undecided).
It’s no surprise, coming out of a Florida State program that was so good in the men’s sprints, but McMurry could be a game-changing 50-200 freestyle addition for the Horned Frogs. At the Georgia Last Chance meet, his best of a solid freshman season in Tallahassee, he swam a 20.6 in the 50 free, a 44.4 in the 100 free, and a 1:37.8 in the 200 free.
Those times would have all placed him among the top four TCU swimmers last year and therefore likely onto their A freestyle relays. He would have been the Frogs’ top 200 freestyler by roughly a second. McMurry will join fellow sophomore-to-be Corey Nix in what should be much-improved relays for year two in the Big 12.
Other late additions to the class include Chris Hearl and John Remetta on the men’s side. Hearl is a 50.30 backstroker and the Kansas 6A State Champion in the 100 yard event, while Remetta is a premier breaststroker (and a local kid) who has bests of 56.31 and 2:02.47 in the 100 and 200. This is the second straight year they’ve added a 56-second 100 breaststroker after picking up Ford Story last season.
The women’s team adds two of their own transfers, Michelle Garland from Michigan State, a 1:03.5 100 yard breaststroker and 2:03.2 200 yard IM’er who has split 1:01.9 on a relay. Lyndsie Gibson, originally from Dallas, will come back closer to home after spending a year at Arkansas. She was part of their great distance group, and was as fast as 4:53.68 in the 500 free, and has also been 56.6 in the 100 back.
They tack on incoming freshmen Sophia Humphreys (52.3 100 yard free, 1:05.3 100 yard breast) and diver Taylor Gould from Georgia.
