The Basics
– FIU took the top spot in six of the 10 events in day two of its meet with Illinois and finished off the Fighting Illini 251.5-166.5 Saturday afternoon at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center in North Miami, Florida. The Panthers won 15 of the 23 events overall at the two-day meet.
– The Panthers won the first four events Friday, surging out to a 63-11 lead and cruised to the victory on Saturday.
– Junior Naomi Ruele (Gaborone, Botswana), won the first event for the Panthers on Saturday, with a time of 26.91 in the event.
– That was followed by sophomore Carlita Luukkanen (Lambere, Finland) and her 100 Breast time of 1:04.43, the second-fastest time by a Conference USA swimmer in that event this season.
– In the 200 Back, senior Skye Carey (Satellite Beach, Florida / Satellite HS) was nearly two seconds faster than the next swimmer in the 200 Back, with a touch time of 2:03.80.
– Freshman Stephanie Hussey finished first in the next event, the 100 Fly, at 55.85.
– To finish the swimming portion of the meet, the Panthers won the 200 Free Relay, at 1:35.83. The team of Sara Gyertyanffy (Desenzano, Italy), Ruele, Ally Mayhew (Dayton, Ohio) and Letizia Bertelli (Cremona, Italy) took that last 11 points for FIU.
– During the swimming, reigning Conference USA Diver of the Week Rachel Foord (Melbourne, Australia) finished first in the 3-meter springboard, with an NCAA Zone-qualifying score of 283.12. The freshman also posted a Zone-qualifying score yesterday in the 1-meter event.
From the Pool Deck
“I’m happy with the team this weekend,” said FIU Head Coach Randy Horner. “We weren’t as sharp as yesterday, but this was a big step forward from a disappointing weekend last week. We realized some things as a team and are better moving into our mid-season test at Purdue.”
Next Up
FIU will compete in the seven-team Purdue Invitational, November 16-18. Action begins with preliminary heats at 11 a.m., with finals to swim at 7 p.m. in West Lafayette, Indiana.
