Felipe Franca of Corinthians had himself a great 100 breaststroke on Thursday morning, breaking a continental record while qualifying for Worlds in two events with his one race.
That’s because Franca opened his 100 (short course meters) breast in 26.21, faster than his own meet record in the event and seven hundredths faster than the cut time for the Doha World Championships. He went on to finish in 56.25 to take two tenths off the South American record and punch his ticket to Doha in the 100-meter distance as well.
Franca wasn’t the only one to have a good morning. Etiene Medeiros continued her strong run at the Jose Finkel Trophy with a South American-record 26.58 in the 50 back. That knocks off the old record of 26.61 set by Fabiola Molina. That’s the second of Molina’s records that Medeiros has picked off this week.
Both Franca and Medeiros made the Brazilian team for Short Course Worlds, and two more swimmers joined them. Leonardo de Deus took the top spot in the 200 fly, going 1:53.11 to sneak under the 1:53.91 cut time. Felipe Lima finished behind Franca in the 100 breast, also getting into Worlds with his 57.99.

Ha! I remember the uproar when he won medals in the worlds for 50 breast (lc and sc) doing that. Not legal and surprised he’s still getting away with it!
