Vlad Morozov Takes Top Seed in 100 Free in Chartres Day 1

2016 FINA WORLD CUP: CHARTRES-PARIS

The World Cup series is back – kicks off today in Chartres/France. In yesterday’s press conference, Katinka Hosszu and Chad Le Clos both said that it will take some time to get back into the short course racing but Katinka will try to lower some of her records later at the tour.

Katinka Hosszu started with a crowded schedule into the World Cup season and of course made many finals. So too did Michael Andrew of the United States. With starts today in the 100m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 100m backstroke, 100m IM, 50m butterfly, he has made four out of five possible finals.

Russia’s Vladimir Morozov touched in 47,04 in the 100m freestyle for the #1 seed for finals. Michael Andrew will join him in the final, he clocked a 48,89.

Katinka Hosszu finished with the top time this morning in the 200 m freestyle in 1:57,39. Kirill Prigoda, RUS, set the fastest time in the men’s 50 m breaststroke in 26,27, followed by Cameron van der Burgh (26,78). Michael Andrew took the fifth spot for the final in 27,11.

The top seed in the women’s 100m breaststroke is Katie Meili, who hit the wall in a time of 1:04,49. The next-fastest swims in the morning heats came from Jamaican Alia Atkinson in 1:04,89 and 2016 Olympic Champion in the 200 m breaststroke, Rie Kaneto (JPN)  in 1:05,25.

The “Iron Lady” Katinka Hosszu will be tonight’s top qualifier in the 100 m butterfly in 57,72, ahead of Belgium’s Kimberly Buys in 57,96.

Mitch Larkin set himself up as the #1 seed for the men’s 100 m backstroke final, he clocked a 50,98. Michael Andrew will be in the sixth seed tonight (53,49).

Top-seeded in the women’s 50 m backstroke is Daryna Zevina (UKR), she finished in 26,55, second fastets into the final is Australia’s Emily Seebohm in 26,55.

Katinka Hosszu is the 2016 Olympic Champion in the 200m and 400m IM and the world record holder in both events short and long course. She took the top seed for tonight’s final in 2:09,28, ahead of Austria’s Lisa Zaiser, who clocked a 2:09,89,

Jeanette Ottesen, Denmark, took the top spot for the women’s 50m freestyle final with a 24,31, in second came Katinka Hosszu in 25,21. Katie Meili will join them in the final, she clocked a 25,27 in prelims for the 5th seed.

In tonight’s men’s 200m breaststroke final, Russia’s Kirill Prigoda is the top seed (2:06,33). Germany’s Marco Koch took the second seed in 207,46.

Vladimir Morozov (RUS) is the top qualifier in the men’s 100 m IM (52,90). Michael Andrew set himself up as the #3 seed for finals by clocking a 53,44.

Andrii Govorov (UKR) took the top spot in the men’s 50 m butterfly in 22,30, and Chad Le Clos grabbed second in 23,03. Michael Andrew clocked a 23,87 for the ninth place after prelims, making it the one final he won’t race in the evening session.

I don’t know how they are doling out the prize money here, but it doesn’t look like Michael will be bringing any home. Looks like he took on too heavy an event load again if he was trying to make the podium.

Yes, whoever is making these decisions is doing a disservice to him. The only reason to choose this would be the cash. Five 7th place finishes earns no money and no points. At least try and podium in something.

I’m no Michael Andrew expert, but from what I’ve seen over the last two years, he does not appear to be a Phelps/Lochte/Hosszu type that can recover quickly and put together multiple strong swims in a single session.

Is there any possibility that Vlad will seek US citizenship?

It’s possible but would take a while if he did. I doubt he will. He’s the man on the Russian squad. And after the “doping” thing (he’s still never failed a test hence the quotes) people like Lilly king would get all self righteous in the press if he tried

On the other hand, what is the Russian Federation worth to him now? Just an overhang on his marketability in the west if he does put it all together in the next 2 Worlds and Olympics.

Had a,
How can you use a word like “never” in regards to Russian athletes failing drug tests? The whole point of the scandal was that we (the general public) couldn’t be sure of anything because of the systemic corruption in the RADA. Regarding Lily King, self righteous? Are you implying she is a cheater as well?

Well, I can use the word never because it describes the frequency with which Vlad Morozov has failed drug tests. As far as the McLaren report, he was simply named as an athlete who was potentially part of the sample switching. There was no actual proof presented of his samples being switched, and I’m going to go ahead and assume his name was thrown in simply because of his elite status. Until I see some actual evidence of doping, whether its a test result, a whistleblower with first hand knowledge of it, or something similar, I’m assuming people are innocent until proven guilty.
There is also such a thing as a biological passport program, that most if not all… Read more »

Govorov has really been nailing the 50 fly lately. Maybe a 21 tonight? He could potentially drop Deibler’s WR by worlds this December.

I love Govorov. I have been a fan since last year when I saw him take only like 3 kicks of the turn wall in a 50scm fly. I can’t kick underwater at all so it’s nice to know someone is getting by without having to kick out to 15. I am part of the exclusive club where your breaststroke is the same speed as your underwater fly kick.

I thought “Morozov 47.04 holy shit! Must be a typo and Prigoda 2:06.33 WR! Wow, and Govorov 22.30 Why is everyone going so fast!” The I remebered it was short course 🙂

Govorov went 22.69 some months ago in Long Course. 22.30 is not that good really short course

I think you missed my point, I thought it was long course, which would make these times ridiculous, then I remembered it that these are short course times.
