The fifth stop of the FINA Diving Grand Prix 2014, held in Guanajuato (MEX) on May 15-18, was a show of strength by China and Mexico: the two diving powerhouses climbed the podium a total 11 times. The locals pocketed three titles – the men’s 3m springboard, the men’s and women 3m springboard synchro – while China swept the five remaining events. Australia and USA also obtained a podium spot.
Mexico’s Jahir Ocampo stunned Chinese favourite Li Shixin in the men’s 3m springboard, finishing first with a total 462.10. Ocampo’s teammate Julian Sanchez placed third in the event. In the men’s 10m platform, Huo Liang (CHN) edged out compatriot Zhang Yanquan for the gold, scoring 552.15 points. Home favourite Jonathan Ruvalcaba completed the podium.
Among women, Wun Chunting (CHN) took out the women’s 3m springboard (344.10 points), besting teammate Wei Ying, second, and Laura Sanchez (MEX), third. In the women’s 10m platform, Ren Qian remained unchallenged, scoring a total 416.00 points. Ji Siyu (CHN) was second while local hope Alejandra Madrigal took the bronze.
