A pretty low-key morning saw just 6 events go off: the 50 breast, 100 free and 200 back for each gender.
The most star-studded event was the men’s 100 free, where Joao de Lucca took the top seed in 49.17. Expect that final to be much faster – it includes names like World Record-holder Cesar Cielo (49.60 in prelims), Marcelo Chierighini (49.55) and rising star Matheus Santana (49.55).
Joanna Maranhao will look to add to her medal haul this week. The Pinheiros swimmer is the top seed in the 200 back at 2:16.43, but continental record-holder Natalia de Luccas is also in the field.
Proud former teammate! It’s a pleasure to have him as a role model, because he doesn’t just swim fast in practice. He leads by example and humility. Great guy!
