Farida Osman Clocks 57.66 100 Fly To Break African Record

2022 FINA WORLD AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

In the women’s 100 fly final at the 2022 World Championships, Egyptian swimmer Farida Osman finished seventh in a time of 57.66, breaking the African record. She beats out South African Erin Gallagher‘s old record from 2019 by 0.01 of a second. She is the only non-South African woman in the all-time top 5 performer rankings for the 100 fly.

Yesterday, in the prelims of the the 100 fly, Osman swam a time of 57.76. That was her fastest swim since the 2016 Olympics, before she beat out her prelims time today.

Osman’s advantage over Gallagher came on her first half, as she split 0.19 seconds faster than Gallagher on the first 50. However, Gallagher was 0.18 seconds faster on her last 50.

Osman has seen considerable success on the international stage in the 50 fly, as she won the bronze medal in this event at both the 2017 and 2019 World Championships. However, she has never made it out of the prelims of the 100 fly before this year, as she finished 17th in 2017 and 2019. Osman is set to race in the 50 fly and attempt to defend her bronze medals later in this meet.
