Fanny Lecluyse downed the Belgian national record in order to take the fourth seed in the women’s 200m breaststroke after this morning’s prelims. Sporting a 2:23.77 at the touch Lecluyse took over two seconds off her own national record. Lecluyse’s previous record was set at the 2011 World championships where she was a 2:25.92.
If Lecluyse can stay in the 2:23 range, and even take some more time off her newly established record she should have a solid shot of making finals.
Finnish swimmer Jenna Laukannen broke the national record in the women’s 200m breaststroke as well. Rocking a 2:25.91, Laukannen just squeezed in as the 16th seed in order to qualify for the semifinals. In order to do so, she was faster than defending 200m breaststroke world champion Yuliya Efimova who was 17th, just out of a semifinal spot, in 2:26.11.
Anton McKee of Iceland managed to down the national record in the men’s 200m breaststroke. McKee, who competes in the United States with the University of Alabama, swam a 2:10.21 this morning in order to qualify for tonight’s semifinal 10th overall.
Erik Persson of Sweden took the 11th seed behind McKee, also solidifying his spot in tonight’s semifinals. Persson swam a 2:10.41, breaking his own Swedish national record by almost an entire second.
Hello Jean-Michel Ervinforthewin!
You must be proud of your swimmers!
Belgium doesn’t have a big team but Timmers and Lecluyse swim the meet of their life so far.
There were also other Belgian swimmers with PB’s and BR’s you might have not noticed: Buys, Heersbrandt and Croenen.
Correct.
